This morning's training consisted of a puppy pad to introduce tracking training. Although River has done two puppy pads prior to this I wanted to do it again because it had been a few days since her last tracking session so I wanted to see where she was at mentally and emotionally to see if she'd be ready for the next step.

At no surprise to myself, she aced this session and is showing extremely strong signs of becoming a great tracking dog.

As you can see, she is very engaged with sniffing and finding her food which is the first great sign to successful outcomes in this sport.

River didn't see me make me this puppy pad, I simply had her in the crate inside then I trodden on the grass and sprinkled her meat onto the puppy pad and when I let her out of the crate I didn't say anything, I let her figure it out for herself and it took her only a few seconds to discover it.

My daughter was riding her bike around the same area so it was a good distraction however River was too invested in the task at hand. I'm so proud of her!

Towards the end of this video you will see River walk off the pad and then make her way back onto it as this indicates she's already picking up she only gets paid if she's on the right track, literally.

Took River out to my daughters horse riding lesson and at 11 and a half weeks old she showed nothing but confidence around a pony for the first time and met a new dog who she was eager to play with.

Nothing has phased her so far!

This is part of her exposure work and another thing ticked off the list between the 8 to 16 week critical period.

Another thing to remember is genetics play about 70% of how your puppy/dog will deal with real life and you cannot out train genetics. You can manage them.

River is an exceptionally well bred west working line German Shepherd who has an extremely balanced mental and emotional state and the wait for this pup was so worth it.

Reasons for Not Allowing People to Touch Your Dog
In Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months and Basic Dog Obedience, we advise people to not allow strangers to touch their dog. This has generated a lot of questions so Ed decided to write this article to expand on the reasons and exceptions for this policy.

To understand this, you must first understand what we expect from a relationship with our dogs. We want a dog that sees us as the center of its universe. We want our dog to focus on us and we want it to ignore other humans and animals.

We don't want a dog to look at other people as “petting machines” or “treat dispensers”. We don't want our dog approaching everyone and expecting to engage with them. We want our dog to accept people as fixtures in the environment. We want our dog to be aloof to strangers, but at the same time, we don't want our dog to be suspicious or aggressive to strangers (unless we tell them to be that way).

We carry this concept into our home where we have several dogs that are trained by a different family members.

Exposure work for River.. Bunnings trip #2 and a playground from the other day.

Lots of people walking past in Bunnings and trolleys, cars, the sound of the registers and all the different smells.

The Playground offered different surface textures, moving playground

8 to 16 weeks is an extremely critical period to socialise your puppies and expose them to ALL different environments.

There is a reason why there are SO many dogs out there that have no control over themselves because they were never correctly socialised in the critical window.

I've had River for 3 days and have already started confidence building, exposure and correct socialisation at Bunnings, the pet shop, a primary school classroom. It is NEVER too early to start training your puppy and between 8 and 16 weeks is the most crucial time to start to set your dog up for success later in life.

River has shown no signs of fear and has walked up to a big horse statue at the pet shop with confidence, walked over drains without hesitation and is really taking everything in so calmly and confidently. A quick vet trip also showed how River really doesn't give a 💩 about much at all 😂 this is all part of early exposure.

Training at home has started which has included crate training, sit, down, stand, name recognition, stay at doors/gates, some boundaries within the home, short car trips and only giving attention when she is calm and not whinging.

Guys, when choosing a puppy please do your research. Not only choose a breed that suits your lifestyle but GENETICS MATTER more than anything else.

I'm so proud to have such an exceptionally well bred German Shepherd!

We all enjoyed a lovely bush walk in the icy cold breeze and light rain. This weather does not stop us from being out! Currently dog sitting my brothers dog and we both had to hold a leash each 😂
