Located in the centre of Bendigo, operating out of the McIvor Road Veterinary Centre, Central Veterinary Emergency (CVE) provides high quality emergency and critical care services to all pets in Central Victoria. Operating on weekends from Friday 6pm to Monday 8am and Public Holidays. Now your regular family vet can get some well deserved rest on the weekend whilst knowing that their clients and patients are in good hands. Our dedicated team of veterinary and support staff are more than happy to help out in all emergencies. Meet Bertie! 💛🐾

This handsome Golden Retriever recently came into our care for a gastrointestinal foreign body, requiring surgery.

It didn't take long for Bertie's sweet nature and signature side-eye to win over our team, especially Dr Claire and Nurse Crystal! 👀💛

Throughout his stay, Bertie enjoyed plenty of cuddles, walks in the sunshine, and being hand-fed his meals with no shortage of love and attention. 🥰

We're so happy to share that Bertie is now back home with his family and doing amazingly well!

Some patients leave a lasting impression, and Bertie is certainly one of them. Thank you to his family for trusting us with their beautiful boy. 🌼

Not all foreign bodies are toys… 🐱

Meet Saruman, one of our nurses’ cats. 💙

He was recently found to have a trichobezoar—a compacted mass of hair in the gastrointestinal tract.

While cats naturally swallow hair when grooming, sometimes that hair can accumulate instead of passing through normally and become a foreign body.

Thankfully, Saruman has had his veterinary team (and plenty of nurse cuddles!) looking after him. 🥰

Signs of a gastrointestinal foreign body can include vomiting, reduced appetite, lethargy, abdominal discomfort or changes in bowel movements.
If your cat seems unwell or you’re concerned something isn’t right, it’s always worth getting them checked.

As the weather gets warmer, snakes become more active and curious pets can quickly find themselves a little too close.

If you see your pet interacting with a snake or suspect they may have been bitten, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Seek veterinary care immediately.

Signs may include:
➡Sudden weakness or collapse
➡Wobbliness/trembling
➡Vomiting
➡Dilated pupils
➡Difficulty breathing
➡Paralysis

Some pets may even collapse and then appear to recover, so any suspected encounter should be taken seriously.

MEET BOO 💗
Patient. Catbassador. Lifeline supporter.

Boo recently came to us with a urethral blockage and, after being successfully unblocked, we’re very happy to hear he’s recovering well at home. 🐾

Boo also has a pretty special role outside the clinic. He’s the Lifeline Cat, a Catbassador helping support Lifeline through the Cat of the Year competition.

So today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, it felt especially fitting to share his story.

Mental health is an important conversation in every community, but it holds particular significance within the veterinary profession. Veterinary professionals face a higher risk of su***de than the general population, making conversations around mental health and support especially important in our industry.

Today is a reminder to check in with the people around you, including the ones who always seem okay. Ask the question. Listen. Stay connected. 💛

Poor Percy had a little grooming mishap and came to see us at CVE with a laceration to his ear. 🐶🩹

After clipping and cleaning the area, we wrapped his ear snugly against his head for 24 hours to help control the bleeding and allow a clot to form.

Ear wounds can certainly be impressive bleeders, but Percy was soon patched up and ready to head home. 💙

Repeated litter tray visits, straining, crying, restlessness, or passing little to no urine can be signs of a urinary blockage.

This is a painful, life-threatening emergency, particularly in male cats. Please do not wait to see whether it improves.
