Poor Percy had a little grooming mishap and came to see us at CVE with a laceration to his ear. 🐶🩹

After clipping and cleaning the area, we wrapped his ear snugly against his head for 24 hours to help control the bleeding and allow a clot to form.

Ear wounds can certainly be impressive bleeders, but Percy was soon patched up and ready to head home. 💙

We hope you’re feeling better, Percy!

Repeated litter tray visits, straining, crying, restlessness, or passing little to no urine can be signs of a urinary blockage.

This is a painful, life-threatening emergency, particularly in male cats. Please do not wait to see whether it improves.

While H5N1 bird flu has not currently been detected in Victoria, we are taking precautions to help keep everyone safe. If you find an injured or unwell bird, please call us before bringing it into the clinic so our team can guide you on what to do next.

🙏Thanks to everyone who has reported sick, dead or injured wild birds and wildlife.

The bird near Johanna beach has now been located and assessed. The importance of accurate locations when reporting is paramount.

H5 bird flu has been confirmed in WA and SA – but has not been detected in Victoria.

Moving sick or dead birds can put you and our wildlife at risk from H5 bird flu infection.

If you come across sick or dead birds:
· AVOID contact
· RECORD what you see
· REPORT it immediately
Please report:
· One or more sick or dead seabirds, waterbirds, shorebirds or birds of prey; or marine mammals
· Five or more dead birds anywhere in Victoria

🍫 How much is too much? Your Easter Chocolate Guide.

It only takes a moment for a curious nose to find the Easter stash. When it comes to chocolate, the "danger zone" depends on two things: your dog's weight and the type of chocolate they ate.

While chocolate is the most common Easter emergency, please keep these other holiday staples far away from your pets:

Raisins & Sultanas: Found in Hot Cross Buns. These can cause sudden, irreversible kidney failure in dogs. There is no safe dose.

Xylitol (Birch Sugar): Often found in "sugar-free" candies or baked goods. It causes a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and liver failure.

Macadamia Nuts: Can cause weakness, vomiting, and tremors.

Lilies: For our cat owners—these are highly toxic. Even a small amount of pollen can be fatal.

⚠️ Symptoms can be delayed, but the damage isn't. If you suspect your dog has indulged in the wrong kind of "hunt," don't wait for them to look sick.

If you’ve ever visited us around 6:00 PM on a Friday, you might have noticed things looking a little "extra" busy in our reception! 🐝✨

While the McIvor Road Vet staff are finishing their final discharges and getting day-patients settled, the Central Vet Emergency team is already through the door, triaging new arrivals and prepping for the night shift. 🏥

So, if you see a lot of scrubs and a busy waiting room around this time, don’t worry! It’s just our "Power Hour" where we overlap to make sure your pets never miss a beat of care.
