Meet Isabella 🐮
Isabella is a 3-month old Speckle Park calf who became a regular visitor to our clinic over the past two months.
When Isabella was 2 weeks old, her owner noticed that her umbilicus hadn’t healed the way it should and her navel had become swollen. Upon examination by Dr Sam, it was discovered that Isabella had an umbilical remnant which had become infected.
After at-home treatments failed to clear the infection, it was decided that Isabella needed surgical intervention to remove the infected tissue and close the urachus.
Dr Sam and the team performed the surgery in clinic. It was quite strange for us to see a 90kg calf up on our small animal surgery table!
Nurses Karlie and Sarah maintained a smooth general anaesthetic throughout the long surgery, while vet tech Sophie scrubbed in to assist Dr Sam.
After receiving pain relief and overnight fluid therapy, Isabella was well enough to head home the next morning. Her owner reports that she has healed up nicely and is back to her usual antics (aka chasing after her owner for a bottle!).
