Some of the best geckos to keep in captivity are Diplodactylus (Stone Geckos) and Lucasium (Ground Geckos). Of all the gecko species I’ve kept, these guys easily have the boldest and most charismatic personalities. They also have some of the most attractive colours and markings of any gecko species we have in Australia. Their captive requirements are extremely easy to meet, more so than some of the mor ‘popular’ gecko species being kept.

Their biggest downfall is legislation. Some of these species (not all) either require a higher class of license or are even not permitted to be kept in states. If it wasn’t for legislation, I truly believe that these Diplodactylus and Lucasium species would have surpassed Knob-tailed Geckos in popularity.

Photographed are;
Helmeted Geckos (Diplodactylus galeatus)
Box-patterned Gecko (Lucasium steindachneri)
Beaded Gecko (Lucasium damaeum)

These guys are Bynoe’s Geckos (Heteronotia binoei). These incredible geckos come from a parthenogenetic population, where the entire population consists of only females who are able to reproduce without needing a male to fertilise the egg cells. However, there are also populations of this species (or what’s currently recognised as the one species) that consist of both males and females.

Some hypomelanistic Eastern Thick-tailed Geckos (Underwoodisaurus husbandi). They’re nice and pale with distinct yellow heads through the daytime, but they absolutely glow at nighttime.

The banded form of the Prickly Knob-tailed Gecko (Nephrurus asper). Possibly one of the best natural colour variations of a geckos there is.

Due to their lighter colouration, how thin the skin is and how fine the scales are on this juvenile Chameleon Gecko (Carphodactylus laevis), light is able to pass through the body. As if this species wasn’t weird enough already.

In these photos you can clearly see the internal organs including the black sac which encases the digestive organs (first picture), the carotid artery in the neck (second picture), and the brachial artery in the arm (third picture).
