🏆🏆We are pleased to share a positive outcome for breeders, exhibitors, pet owners and everyone involved in the companion animal sector. 🏆🏆

Following PIAA's formal submission to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry regarding the New World Screwworm (NWS) situation in the United States, the department has confirmed that any suspension on the import of live animals, including companion animals, from the USA has now been removed.

Behind the scenes, PIAA works to:
1️⃣Make evidence-based submissions to government
2️⃣ Engage directly with decision-makers on behalf of the pet industry
3️⃣Advocate for practical, science-based outcomes
4️⃣ Ensure the voices of businesses, professionals and pet owners are represented when policies impact our sector

This result means that Australians importing companion animals from the USA can continue to do so under the current biosecurity framework, providing certainty for breeders, exhibitors and pet owners alike.

Thank you to everyone who raised concerns and shared information with us. It reinforces that when our industry speaks with one voice, we can achieve meaningful outcomes.

This is what PIAA membership makes possible.

No single retailer, importer or business could do this alone. But together, the industry can put evidence-backed applications in front of government and fight for practical, regulated outcomes.

If you benefit from this industry, this is your time to be part of the work that moves it forward.

An emergency measure can quietly become permanent. All it takes is for no one to challenge it.

When the screwworm detection in Texas triggered a suspension of live animal imports from the US, the doors closed with no timeline, no pathway and absolutely NO ANSWERS.

Behind this reactive decision are real families and suppliers caught in the cross-fire. Six months of compliance. Hundreds in non-refundable permit fees before a single vet visit. Thousands more in testing, flights and transport. Some were days away from bringing these dogs in.

So we didn't stay silent.

PIAA has made a formal submission to the Department of Agriculture.

We don't dispute the threat. Screwworm is serious. But a blanket ban on an entire country is heavier than the risk requires.

No other authority has gone this far. Canada, Mexico, and several US states all chose targeted, conditions-based measures over a blanket ban on companion dogs. Australia is the outlier.

The science backs a smarter path. So does international trade law.

Our submission lays out the alternative. Zone-based restrictions, not whole-of-country bans. Proven pre-export treatment. Enhanced quarantine on arrival. And a hardship pathway for the families caught mid-process.

Our submission makes six formal recommendations to the Department. From a zone-based framework to a hardship pathway for affected families, every one is built on science and aimed at a fair, proportionate outcome.

This is what PIAA is for. We make sure a temporary precaution doesn't become a permanent default just because no one pushed back.

We back the industry. We back our members. Every time.

We will keep our members informed throughout the process.

PIAA has formally applied to add dubia roaches to the Live Import List.

The recent federal crackdown on dubia cockroaches has put reptile keepers, zoos, animal rescuers and small breeding businesses across Australia in crisis mode. Taronga and Melbourne Zoos have destroyed their colonies.

Small businesses are reporting profits down 50% and looking at staff cuts, for breeding an insect they checked was legal with their state governments before they started.

Dubias have been in Australia for over two decades. There are an estimated 100 million nationwide. They're slow-moving, there's no record of them establishing in the wild, and they've become a staple feed source for reptiles, primates and even critically endangered native birds.

We know the response has been heavy-handed and disproportionate, and we've said so directly to DCCEEW and Environment Minister Murray Watt. More importantly, we've acted: PIAA has lodged a formal application to have Blaptica dubia added to the Live Import List, so this essential feeder species can be bred and sold lawfully.

DCCEEW has confirmed receipt of our application. Assessment takes time, but the industry deserves a sensible, evidence-based outcome, not blanket enforcement against businesses that did everything right.

We'll keep our valued members updated as the application progresses.

PIAA has formally raised concerns with the Federal Government about the growing gap between state biosecurity approvals and Commonwealth live import recognition.

Good-faith businesses operating transparently under written state advice should not be treated the same as illegal smugglers.

We are calling for a proportionate, nationally consistent approach that protects biosecurity while restoring legal certainty for legitimate Australian businesses.

PIAA will continue to push for practical reform, clearer pathways and fair treatment for responsible industry operators.

⏰Big changes to super are coming VERY SOON from 1 July 2026.

Under Payday Super, employers will need to make sure super guarantee payments are received by their employees’ super funds within 7 business days of payday, not quarterly.

This means businesses will need to review their payroll, cash flow and super payment processes well before the changes begin.

Key changes include:

• Super will be calculated on qualifying earnings
• Employers will report both qualifying earnings and super liability through STP
• Late payment rules and penalties will change
• The Small Business Superannuation Clearing House will no longer be available from 1 July 2026
• Super funds will have 3 business days to allocate or return contributions

Now is the time to check your payroll systems, employee super details and payment processes so your business is ready. Download ATO's Fact Sheet here - https://zurl.co/NT4BK

Australia’s most wanted fish just got a shot at becoming legal.

PIAA has formally lodged a 58-page application with the Australian Government to add the Asian Arowana to the Live Import List.

Known as the “dragonfish”, the Asian Arowana is one of the world’s most culturally significant and valuable ornamental fish. But in Australia, there is currently no legal pathway to import, buy or sell one.

That does not stop demand.

It pushes it underground.

PIAA’s application proposes a strict, regulated pathway with mandatory CITES-registered captive breeding, microchipping, quarantine, indoor-only keeping, keeper registers and full traceability from farm to owner.

This is not deregulation.

It is about replacing illegal, unmonitored entry with a legal system built on science, biosecurity and accountability.

This is what PIAA membership makes possible.

No single retailer, importer or business could do this alone. But together, the industry can put evidence-backed applications in front of government and fight for practical, regulated outcomes.

If you benefit from this industry, this is your time to be part of the work that moves it forward.
