All Pullets Sold! 🏡

A huge thank you to everyone who reached out! Our lovely young ladies have all found homes, mostly back in the wonderful Northern Rivers! 🐓💛 A few of the girls will be making the trip back that way at the end of the week, so it’s lovely to see them heading to familiar country.

For those who missed out, don’t worry, we’ve just had some absolutely beautiful chicks hatch from our roosters Billy Ray, Ron Weasley, and our handsome white boy. If any of these little ones turn out to be hens, they’ll be available early next year.

Keep an eye on our page for updates, and don’t forget, we travel often as a family for work and adventures, so feel free to ask about meeting halfway! 🚗🌾

🌊✨ Mr Splash needs a new home! ✨🌊

Our handsome Silkie rooster, Mr Splash, is ready to move on to his next chapter in the Baradine/Coonabarabran area. He’s been a real character here at Elara Silkies, but now it’s time for him to strut his stuff in a new flock.

👉 For our Northern Rivers friends: we’ll also be passing through on the weekend of the 10th of October, so he could hitch a ride if that suits better.

📌 This also applies to any other chickens currently advertised. We still have 4 pullets available, have a look at our website to see which ones!

If you’d like to welcome Mr Splash (or another one of our pullets) into your flock, send me a message. 💌

📍 Pick-up/meet-up available in Baradine, Coonabarabran, or along our travel route back to Lismore.

We’ve officially settled into our new home in Baradine! ✨🐔

It’s been a big few weeks for our little family, between the move, starting a new job, and getting the chickens settled in, we’re slowly getting back into the swing of things.

We’ve got a handful of gorgeous pullets who are almost ready to find new homes 🏡 but please bear with us as things might take a little longer than usual (non work mornings are for toddler cuddles, not chicken photos just yet 🐣).

If you’re new to our page or local to the Baradine area and looking for Silkies, we’ve got you! 💛
Stay tuned, these fluffballs will be worth the wait.

🥚🐔 CHICKEN REPRODUCTION 101 – HOW EGGS ARE MADE! 🌸💡

Ever wondered what’s going on inside your hen before she lays that perfect little egg? Let’s break it down, Silkie style!

🧬 A hen’s reproductive system is made up of an o***y and an oviduct (on the left side only, hens are quirky like that!).

Here’s how the magic happens:

🔹 1. O***y:
This is where the yolks (ova) develop. A healthy hen can have thousands of undeveloped yolks, all waiting their turn!

🔹 2. Infundibulum:
Once the yolk is released, it’s “caught” by the infundibulum. If a rooster has done his job, this is where fertilisation happens.

💡FUN FACT: Hens can store viable rooster s***m for up to 2–3 weeks in tiny storage tubules… BUT if she’s not a fan of the fella, she can flush it out and reject it! Girl power, feathered edition. 👑

🔹 3. Magnum:
The egg white (albumen) forms around the yolk.

🔹 4. Isthmus:
Shell membranes are added to protect the egg.

🔹 5. Uterus (Shell Gland):
This is where the shell is formed and pigmentation (like brown or tinted colour) is added.

🔹 6. Va**na & Cloaca
Finally, the egg is laid. Big side first!

🐣 BONUS FACT:
Hens don’t need a rooster to lay eggs, but without one, the eggs are not fertile and won’t hatch.

So next time your girl lays an egg, give her a little nod of appreciation. She’s been working hard behind the scenes! 💪💕

Did you know that the color of an egg yolk is influenced by what the hen eats? 🥚

🐔 Hens raised in cages and fed industrial feed typically lay eggs with pale yellow yolks.
🌿 When they have access to some plants and insects, the yolk turns a deeper orange.
🥕 The richest, most vibrant yolks come from free-range hens that eat a varied diet of greens, farm scraps, and bugs.

This is due to carotenoids—natural pigments found in many foods. The more diverse and natural the hen's diet, the brighter, tastier, and more nutritious the yolk becomes!
