It has been a busy time for the vets at Bannockburn Veterinary Clinic, with Dr Gen attending the Continuing Veterinary Education conference in Melbourne on the ever challenging topic of the animal endocrine system.
Dr Kylie travelled to the not so sunny sunshine coast to attend the Small Animal Veterinarians conference expanding the wide topic of the joys of general practice.
Dr Hugh attended an ultrasound course earlier in the year, Dr Charlie is doing some online learning and Dr Peter went overseas to attend the British Veterinarians conference on surgery.
We are always keeping up with new methods and treatment techniques and conferences are a great way to consolidate knowledge and also run into some old mates in the field!

‼️BIRD FLU UPDATE‼️

With the increasing detection of bird flu we are asking the community to be more vigilant in their own protection, protection of others and pets.

Ag Vic has suggested housing chicken flocks of over 50 indoors to limit the chance of exposure to wild birds

We are also asking members of the public to be on the lookout for unwell birds, especially groups or multiple dead birds and report to the 24/7 Emergency Animal Disease Hotline immediately on 1800 675 888.

If wildlife does need to come to the clinic PLEASE CALL THE CLINIC FIRST so we can triage and assess over the phone if we should be seeing the animal. As such, birds may not be permitted into the clinic and rather, may be seen in our equine facility.

If you do have a sick pet bird or chicken, we will do our best to still see and treat your bird, but some adaptations may need to be accounted for.

The importance of dental xrays 🦷🩻

Jericho, a Border Collie came in after the owner saw him run into a fence and noticed his tooth crown was gone 😯
Xrays revealed the tooth had snapped and the root was still snuggly in place. This would be very painful as the nerve to the tooth had been acutely exposed!
Dr Millie created a gum flap and extracted the root, relieving Jericho from the pain of the snapped tooth.
He had an uneventful recovery and is back to chasing balls around, steering clear of fences!

Wilbur came in to the clinic recently for desexing. 🐖 🐷
Under the care of Dr Charlie, Dr Millie and Nurse Lily, he had a full general anaesthetic for the procedure, and recovered in a soft warm bed where we couldn't resist to snap these shots of his cute little face. 😍

Just a reminder that during July Bannockburn Vet Clinic are taking part in National Desexing Month!

We are offering a discounted rate of 20% on all desexing procedures during July in an effort to encourage responsible pet ownership.

Desexing your pet has many benefits including helping to reduce the number of unwanted pets. Many cats and dogs are bred by accident because they haven't been desexed.

Other benefits include preventing reproductive cycle behaviours such as roaming, spraying/marking territory and displaying aggressive behaviour.

There are also a number of health problems that can be prevented by desexing including mammary tumours, pyometra, prostate problems and tumours.

When one culprit in your pack eats something they shouldn't, but then you all have to be made to vomit to identify the perpetrator! 🤮

The owners of this pack of Kelpies noticed some missing rat bait. Not being 100% sure who may have eaten it, all 4 dogs had to come down and vomit. 2 of the 4 were guilty of the offence, but it was lucky they were successfully able to decontaminate as rat bait can kill in a matter of a few days.

All 4 were given anti nausea medication after the elimination to feel better, and we heard the non guilty duo got some extra cuddles that night. 🐶
