Aspley Veterinary Practice Aspley Veterinary Practice is a small animal practice operating under the Vetwell group.

We bought the Aspley Veterinary Pactice from Dr Richard (Harley) Lomax in 1997. At the time it was in an old wooden Queenslander on Gympie Road where Harley had practiced for nearly 30 years. When Harley began practice there was no veterinarian to the north of him until you reached Townsville. Since 1997 we have built a new facility, replaced all the equipment, and introduced highly trained nurses. Aspley is now able to offer full service patient care with veterinary and nursing staff on-site six days a week; dedicated surgery suite; in-house biochemistry and haematology analysis, and dedicated hospital facilities for patients needing to stay with us. The most valuable asset we gained from the old practice was Dr Jill Retell who continues practising today

We offer a comprehensive range of services including:

General consultations
Vaccinations
Routine desexings
Soft tisssue surgery
Dental procedures
In house pathology (including blood tests)
Puppy Preschool
Weight Loss Club
Preventative health care advice
Nutrition advice

We had the gorgeous little Miss Bronte in today for a pain relief holiday, but it just so happened to be her 14th birthday!

While spending your birthday in hospital might not be everyone’s idea of a good time, we couldn’t let this special milestone pass without a little celebration! Bronte enjoyed a special birthday lunch and, of course, a birthday hat to mark the occasion.

Happy 14th Birthday, Bronte! We hope you were thoroughly spoilt and enjoyed your special day with us!

🐾 HAPPY VET NURSE & TECH DAY! 🐾

Today we’re celebrating the incredible humans behind the scenes who keep our patients happy, healthy and (mostly 😂) under control!

From cuddles and treats to assisting in surgery, monitoring anaesthetics, preparing medications, answering phones, cleaning a LOT and dealing with all the weird and wonderful things that come with the job — our nurses and techs truly do it all! 🩺🐶🐱

Thank you for the compassion, dedication, patience, coffee-fuelled energy ☕ and endless love you give to every patient.

We’re so lucky to have such an amazing team! ❤️

🚨 WHAT DID YOUR PET EAT?! 🐶

Meet Luke! 💙 This cheeky boy decided that a piece of carpet looked like a tasty snack… unfortunately, carpet isn’t quite on the menu! 😅
Luckily, Luke’s owner noticed something wasn’t right and brought him in. We were able to induce vomiting, and thankfully, the piece of carpet came back up! 🙌

But why is this important? 👀

Pets can be curious (and sometimes VERY determined) eaters! Things like carpet, socks, toys, bones, clothing and other household objects can become foreign bodies. If swallowed, they can get stuck in the stomach or intestines and cause a potentially life-threatening obstruction, sometimes requiring surgery to remove.

🐾 Keep an eye out for:
• Vomiting or repeated retching
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy or unusual behaviour
• Abdominal pain or discomfort
• Changes in bowel movements
• Your pet suddenly becoming unwell after eating something they shouldn't

If you think your pet has swallowed something they shouldn't have, contact your vet as soon as possible. In some cases, acting quickly can make all the difference.

And Luke? He's doing well and has hopefully learnt that carpet is for walking on, not eating! 😂🐶

🦁🏆 Happy AFL grand final day! 🏆🦁

The AFL Grand Final is today, and our furry friends are getting behind the Brisbane Lions as they take on the Fremantle Dockers later today! ❤️💙

With the scarves on and the tails wagging, they’re ready to cheer the Lions all the way! 🐶🦁
Show us your furry friend in their Lions gear or your favourite footy team colours! 📸🦁

We’d love to see who else is getting behind the team!

Wishing the Brisbane Lions all the best for tomorrow — Go Lions! ❤️💙🦁

Today we’re celebrating a very special milestone — Charlie is turning 17! 🐾❤️

Charlie is Dr Tayla's fur baby, so he’s a very special member of our extended clinic family. ❤️

Seventeen is an incredible milestone for any dog, so of course he had to celebrate in style! 🎉🍗🎂

And don’t worry — Charlie didn’t eat the whole chicken to himself! 😂 He enjoyed his birthday feast and some delicious specially made dog cake with a few of his friends. 🐶🎂🐾

Happy birthday, Charlie! We hope your 17th year is filled with plenty of treats, cuddles and happy adventures! ❤️🐾

🦷🐾 Behind the scenes of a doggy dental at Aspley Veterinary Practice!

Ever wondered what actually happens when your dog comes in for a dental — especially when they’re one of our adorable flat-faced (brachycephalic) friends? 👀

This gorgeous brachycephalic patient, Peggy, came in for a dental clean and, unfortunately, needed a few extractions too.

For us, keeping your pet safe starts well before the dental begins.

Brachycephalic breeds have some special considerations when it comes to anaesthesia, so this patient received some additional medications beforehand, including sedation, anti-nausea medication and an antacid. 💊

We then carefully managed their sedation and provided pre-oxygenation before anaesthesia, helping prepare their airway and breathing for the procedure. 🫁

During the dental, our veterinary team performed a thorough oral examination and dental X-rays before treating the diseased teeth. Throughout the procedure, our dedicated monitoring included things like oxygen levels, breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and temperature. 🩺

And importantly, the care doesn’t stop when the dental is finished.

Recovery from anaesthesia is a particularly important time for brachycephalic patients, so we provide close monitoring and extra support as they wake up — making sure they are comfortable, breathing well and fully recovered before heading home. ❤️

🎥 Take a look at the video to see what happens behind the scenes!

A veterinary dental is so much more than a “teeth clean”. It involves detailed dental assessment, X-rays, treatment, pain management, anaesthetic monitoring and careful recovery — all tailored to the individual patient.

At Aspley Veterinary Practice, our goal is to make every procedure as safe, comfortable and thorough as possible. And for our brachycephalic patients, that means taking a few extra steps along the way. 🐶💕

Because those little extra steps matter. ❤️

Always ready to greet clients, accept pats and supervise the front desk… although answering the phone may still need some work!
