Eyes…..Are they an emergency??? 🐴 πŸ‘οΈ

The short answer is yes.
Horse’s eyes are very delicate and even the smallest of injuries are very painful and can become serious very quickly! Prompt intervention makes a significant difference in outcomes and may help preserve vision.
Corneal ulcers are one of the most common causes of eye pain we see in horses. Ulcers range from small and superficial to large, deep or melting.
Common signs of eye pain include:
β€’ Squinting or holding the eye shut
β€’ Involuntary blinking
β€’ Swelling
β€’ Excessive tearing or discharge
β€’ Redness
β€’ Sensitivity to light or touching of the face
β€’ Cloudy, bluish or hazy appearance of the eye
β€’ Visibly irregular eye surface
Many simple ulcers can be treated at home and often heal within 7-10 days. More severe ulcers may require hospitalisation and intensive care.
If you suspect your horse has an eye injury do not wait - early assessment and appropriate treatment are essential!
Do not apply anything to your horse's eye before speaking with your vet, some medications can make eye injuries worse.

Club foot is a common conformational issue and can lead to soundness issues.
Some respond well to corrective shoeing alone, but in many cases surgery is needed to correct the issue in young horses.
Fortunately we have had great success with these, and in many cases the surgery can be performed standing with local anaesthetic 🐴 πŸ’‰

Dry conditions yet again are not a pleasant sight to see, here are some tips to keep your horses healthy in the current conditions
- Ensure free access to good quality roughage if pasture is not available- avoid cereal hays like oat and wheat, and stick to grassy hay or lucerne. Slow feeders or bags are great.
-Ensure plenty of clean, cool water is available. Check your dams and make sure the water is still drinkable and accessible
- If buying in town water, some horses may avoid drinking due to the chlorine taste- a small amount of molasses or electrolytes in the water can help
- Avoid feeding in very sandy/dirty areas and try to chuck hay in a different spot each time
- Psyllium husk in the feed may help reduce sand in the gut
- In the dry weather, horses do not need rugs at all for their comfort. If you do rug, ensure that all heavy rugs are removed every day. The sun is still very hot in the middle of the day, especially for a horse in a heavy rug.
