Happy to announce that we have a new team member. Bro the Red Bandit will be in charge of customer care 🐾 🐩 he loves chatting to the day visitors reassuring them that everything is gonna be o.k! The job seems exhausting and nap time in the office takes priority at this stage.

A story about Dr Genine’s favourite animal. Do you know what little creature this is?
A few years back whilst still working in South Africa Dr Genine was presented with this tiny baby little pangolin who somehow ended up in the middle of a busy road with severe head trauma and a few bruises. He was rescued by Dr Helena a state vet who then brought him in to the clinic for emergency care. At first he was disoriented, rolling in circles and unable to stand. After he was stabilised in hospital he got transferred to a rescue centre where he was hand reared and rehabilitated for over a year. What a miracle! He did make it to freedom where he eventually got released back into the wild🧡 There is a short doco on youtube telling his story and showing the depths and level of commitment it takes from the pangolin rescue volunteers to rehabilitate pangolins. These precious animals are currently the most trafficked mammals on earth. African pangolin working group is a rescue organisation very close to Dr. Genine’s heart. See link for the doco but be warned it is not for sensitive souls as the reality of wildlife in crisis can be heart breaking at times. Rainbow worriers across the world are not discouraged though and bravely keep fighting for the preservation of wildlife. How can we help from suburbia? Spread awareness, education and donating to accredited rescue centres 💖

Important information regarding sick wild birds: there has been a positive case of bird flu in WA. The WA department of Health advised the following:

If members of the public encounter a sick or dead bird, they should not touch or handle it. Instead, they should keep their distance and take a photograph, note the location, and report it to the 24-7 Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Signs of H5 bird flu in birds include:

sudden death
lethargy or reluctance to walk, eat or drink
droopy appearance or ruffled feathers
head or limb swelling
bruising of the wattle, comb, feet or skin
respiratory signs such as panting, nasal discharge or sneezing
diarrhoea
unusual head or neck posture, incoordination, inability to walk or stand
unusual reduction in egg production

We are still able to provide emergency care to wildlife. If you are unsure about your pet bird please call us for advice. Thank you for your cooperation 🕊️

We have been blessed in abundance this Christmas with gifts and joy and well wishes from our amazing clients, community and colleagues! This year has been difficult for all of us facing some challenges in our personal lives and witnessing some dear clients going through heartbreaking moments, but coming to work where we get to do what we love, save lives, build friendships, and be there for clients in the midst of their own storms always lifts us up and keeps us going! We are so thankful for all the gratitude we receive, all the kind words and posts, all the licks and purrs, all the grace and patience, every healthy p**p, and mostly for a team who gives it their all and manages a smile and a laugh in situations only vets/nurses could survive! 💖Just a few tips on How to get the most out of your vet visit!
⏰ arrive 5minutes early to weigh your pet, update info, possibly get samples taken prior to the consult 🧪 Don’t be in a hurry at your appointment as some unforseen tests or procedures might take longer than expected
🗣️ let us know if your pet has special requirements like fear of other dogs / anxiety / barks a lot so we can make special arrangements for them
📝 Make sure whoever is accompanying your pet has all the necessary information like diet/symptoms/medical history / worming/ last vaccinations. It is always helpful to write a list if you have multiple questions or concerns
☎️ If you cannot make the appointment with your pet make sure you are available on the phone to answer important questions and give consent to recommend tests/treatments
🐾 Make sure to only talk about the patient booked in and not about all of your lovely fur family members as it takes away time from the patient booked in at the time and we want him/her to get the full value of the consult
💰 If costs are a concern make sure to ask for a rough estimate prior to your visit or as you go during the consult as we do not usually give estimates for everything
😵‍💫Ask to book a long consultation if your pet has more than 2 problems to review
🤯Ask questions if you were not sure about what was communicated
💖Pretend to be calm if you are stressed as this will help your pet to be calm
