A predator built for hunting rats and rodents across the Ethiopian Highlands spends part of its day with a face full of flower pollen. That sentence should not work. And yet here we are. The Ethiopian wolf does not visit these tall, flame-colored blooms by accident. The flowers produce nectar — and the wolves lap it up, pressing their long snouts deep into each flower head. When they pull back, pollen coats the muzzle. Then they move to the next bloom. And the next. Thirty times in a single outing. An hour and a half of this. The wolf is not thinking about pollination. It is just hungry for something sweet. But the mountain ecosystem does not care about intention — it only cares about what moves the pollen. These highlands sit above 10,000 feet. Very few insects survive up there in numbers large enough to do the job reliably. So a mammal stepped in. A carnivore. The rarest wolf on Earth, filling a role nobody would have written into the script. Fewer than 500 Ethiopian wolves remain alive. Each one carrying pollen it does not know it is carrying.
