Lovin' local ❤️
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: LAMB PRICES 🐑💰
If you’ve looked at the price of lamb lately and thought “bloody hell, that’s expensive”...Yep. It most certainly is!
And we think you deserve to understand why.
Australia’s sheep industry is going through a period of enormous change. The end of the live sheep export trade, farmers reducing sheep numbers or changing what they produce, high grain and fertiliser prices, rising transport costs and significantly increased abattoir fees have all contributed to a much tighter supply of lamb.
At the same time, almost every cost involved in producing and processing meat has risen.
The result is lamb prices at levels we’ve never experienced before.
There isn’t one isolated reason for it ~ it’s a multitude of changes hitting the industry at once.
But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
High prices eventually encourage more breeding and more sheep back into the system. As supply increases, prices should come down again.
We can’t make promises of exactly how long that will take ~ but lamb won’t always be at these levels.
So, what can you do in the meantime?
BUY IN BULK! 🐑
A half or whole lamb can make your money go considerably further ~ around a third cheaper overall than buying individual cuts AND you choose how you want it cut. More mince? More roasts? Chops? Steaks? Whatever works for your household!
You’re also buying directly from a small local farm rather than adding another layer between the farmer and your freezer. For us, producing quality meat also comes with real costs. We hang our carcasses for several weeks to develop the quality of the meat. This takes refrigeration space, time and weight ~ because we believe it’s worth doing properly 🙏
So yes, we understand lamb is expensive right now.
But if lamb is still something you want to eat, buying a half or whole animal directly from your local farmer is one of the ways to make it work harder for your household AND support a small WA farming business like us sail the pretty extraordinary seas of a changing sheep industry.
