🦷 August is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

Did you know that dental disease is one of the most common health problems seen in pets?

Bad breath isn’t always just “doggy breath”. It can be a sign of plaque, tartar, painful gums or dental disease hiding below the gum line.

Some signs to look out for include:

*Bad breath
*Red, swollen or bleeding gums
*Yellow or brown tartar
*Difficulty chewing or dropping food
*Pawing at the mouth
*Eating on one side
*Loose or missing teeth

Dental disease can be painful and may affect your pets overall health, but regular dental checks and good home care can make a big difference.

🐾Why are blood tests so important? 🐾

Our pets can’t tell us when something feels wrong, and they’re often very good at hiding signs of illness. Blood tests give us valuable insight into what’s happening inside their bodies.

Blood tests don’t always mean we expect to find something wrong. Sometimes they simply help us confirm that everything looks healthy or detect subtle changes early.

If our veterinary team recommends blood testing for your pet, we’ll always explain what we’re checking and why.

🐶 Pancreatitis 🥓

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas and can make dogs very unwell. It may occur suddenly and is sometimes triggered by eating rich or fatty foods.

Signs to watch for include:

*Vomiting or diarrhoea
*Loss of appetite
*Abdominal pain or a hunched posture
*Lethargy or weakness
*Restlessness or difficulty getting comfortable
*Dehydration

Pancreatitis can range from mild to life threatening, so early veterinary care is important. If your pup is showing these signs, particularly repeated vomiting, abdominal pain or significant lethargy, please contact us promptly.

And remember, those pleading puppy dog eyes can be convincing, but fatty table scraps are best kept off the menu! 💙

Introducing the newest member of the Rose Park Vet family!

Dr Hamish and his wife Belinda welcomed beautiful baby Bonnie Burns 🩷 into the world on Tuesday 09/06.

Hamish will be taking a few weeks off to enjoy time with his gorgeous new addition, but he’ll be back before we know it.

❄️ Keeping Pets Warm This Winter

As the temperatures drop, our furry family members can feel the cold too, especially puppies, kittens, senior pets, short haired breeds, and those with arthritis or medical conditions.

A few simple ways to keep your pets cosy this winter:

*Bring bedding indoors and keep it warm and dry
*Provide extra blankets or a cosy sleeping space away from drafts
*Consider a jacket for short haired or smaller pets on chilly walks
*Ensure fresh water is always available (yes, even in winter!)
*Keep up gentle exercise to help maintain mobility and joint health
*Be careful around heaters and electric blankets

If your pet seems reluctant to move, is shivering, or appears uncomfortable during the colder months, give us a call.
