This Echunga Red-Bellied Black Snake was spotted enjoying the morning sunlight.
The family did a brilliant job of staying still from the moment they saw the snake. As you can see when I approach, snakes often see our movement as a threat they need to get away from, which is exactly what this guy tried to do! If the family had moved, it is likely that he would have gone straight into his hide, making himself inaccessible.
Great example of what to do when you see a snake and why, keeping eyes on it, limiting your movements while we are on our way to help greatly increase our chances of quickly getting the snake.
When a snake is out basking enjoying the sun and doesn't perceive any threat, there's a high chance it will still be sunbathing happily when we arrive!

A great post in regards to snake bite symptoms in pets!

šŸ SNAKES ARE ON THE MOVE! āš ļø
We’ve seen 3 snake bites in pets at Meadows Veterinary Centre in the past week, so we’re urging pet owners to be extra vigilant.

With increased snake activity, keep pets close and avoid long grass, scrub, rocky areas and other places where snakes may be hiding. 🌿

🚨 Know the signs of a snake bite
Signs can vary, but may include:
• Sudden weakness or collapse
• Vomiting or drooling
• Trembling or shaking
• Difficulty walking or wobbliness
• Dilated pupils
• Rapid or difficult breathing
• Bleeding or swelling
• Paralysis or inability to move

Be aware animals can collapse and then appear to make a full recovery - still seek immediate veterinary attention.

āš ļø A snake bite is an emergency. If you suspect your pet has been bitten, keep them as calm and still as possible and seek veterinary attention immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms to develop — they can deteriorate rapidly.

If you’re concerned your pet may have encountered a snake, contact Meadows Veterinary Centre straight away. ā˜Žļø8388 3455

People forget a simple truth, we’re not above nature we’re a part of it, same as every gum tree, every snake, every roo. When you choose to live in the bush, you’re choosing to share space with creatures that were here long before houses, fences, or weekend plans.

Native animals aren’t ā€œmisbehaving.ā€ They’re not being pests. They’re just being animals, doing exactly what they’ve done for thousands of years hunting, nesting, sunning themselves, defending territory, following instincts older than our entire civilisation.

If someone can’t handle that, can’t cope with a goanna on the fence or a possum thumping on the roof, or a snake crossing a track like it owns the place.... then maybe the bush isn’t for them. There’s no point whinging about wildlife simply existing.

Nature doesn’t bend around human comfort.It doesn’t apologise.It doesn’t negotiate.

If you want a world where everything is predictable, sanitised, and neatly boxed away, then go live in the city where the wild has been pushed out and paved over. Out here, the land is alive, and you’re just one more creature walking through it.
