๐Ÿ Danger noodles ๐Ÿ

โ˜€๏ธ Who doesn't love summer!? It's a season that brings sunshine and smiles to people and their pets as they venture outside for some warmth and vitamin D.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ As most Aussies would know, snakes also love the sunshine! Some unlucky South Australian pets like Sensai have already found out, these "danger noodles" pack quite the bite.

๐Ÿฑ Sensai was brought into EVA after his owner noticed his wobbly walk one evening. Once at the clinic, the team confirmed their suspicion of a snake bite with some irregular blood tests and he was treated with oxygen therapy and snake anti- venom.

๐Ÿ The eastern brown snake is the most common snake in South Australia. Their venom is highly toxic, causing immobilisation and bleeding of their prey. In our pets, this can be life threatening and requires urgent veterinary care.

Not all pets are as lucky as Sensai. If you find your pet with a snake this season, don't hesitate to contact our team on (08) 8121 3030 for advice on what to do next.

๐Ÿฅต Heat stroke in pets can be life threatening

๐ŸŒก๏ธWith the temperature rising & summer (finally) coming to the party, we wanted to share our tips & tricks for keeping your fur babies cool this summer. You know, since beach visits are temporarily on pause! โธ๏ธ

๐Ÿถ Provide shaded areas to rest & limit play time to the early morning or evening. Avoid running or excessive exercise

๐ŸฆProvide cool treats like ice bricks made with their favourite treats

๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ Let your pets cool off with shell pools in the backyard under sprinklers

๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ Avoid walks on hot surfaces to prevent burns/blisters. Tip: if you can't walk on the surface bare foot, neither can your pet

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Keep your pet indoors out of the heat where there's air conditioning

๐Ÿš˜ Limit car journeys and DO NOT leave your pet in the car. A "five minute trip" could mean the difference between life and death

๐Ÿ’งProvide plenty of fresh drinking water

โ˜Ž๏ธ Remember advice is free! Contact your regular vet or closest emergency vet (08) 8121 3030 for advice if you are concerned

๐Ÿ”” It's the most chaotic time of the year. With the seizure bells belling, and everyone yelling, you grab all your gear. It's the most chaotic time of our year

๐ŸŽ„ It's the hap-hazardous season of all. From a dog fight that's bleeding, to a cat tinsel eating, extra vets are on call. It's the hap-hazardous season of all

โ˜ƒ๏ธ There'll be cage beds for hosting, drugs ready for dosing, and phone lines all a glow. There'll be scary nurse stories and tales oh so gory, of vet Christmases long ago.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธIt's the most chaotic time of the year. There'll be fluids a flowing, surgery lights will be glowing, the vet cuts with no fear. It's the most chaotic time of our year

๐ŸŽ Endless coffee for roasting, the vet's done a ghosting. Patient triages with nowhere to go. There'll be hairy bum stories, and new client worries of diarrhea long, long ago.

๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป It's the most chaotic time of the year. Hospital sheets overflowing, heart rate monitors all glowing, new patients appear.

๐Ÿ Spicy Fly๐Ÿ
Ever wondered what happens when a petย gets stung by a bee?

๐Ÿ In low grade allergic reactions, dogs and cats will often experience swelling to the skin around their eyes, nose and mouth. They may frantically chew their feet, or rub and scratch their faces along surfaces like grass or carpets to relieve the itch. Some may even develop red hives across their whole body.

๐Ÿ’‰ By the time we see them at EVA they resemble cartoon characters with big puffy faces! Thankfully for most pets a quick injection of antihistamines +/-ย ย steroids is all they need ๐Ÿ’‰

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ In serious cases however, anaphylatic shock can occur causing signs of sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, vomiting and pale gums. These cases, unlike the pictures above are no laughing matter and require urgent veterinary care ๐Ÿฉบ these pets won't have the typical facial swelling so instead we look for markers like a "gall bladder halo" seen on ultrasound of the liver to help us identify possible causes for illness ๐Ÿ˜‡

๐Ÿพ Remember we're here to help you. If it's an emergency to you, it's an emergency to us ๐Ÿพ

โœจA quiet superstition โœจ

Are people in the veterinary industry superstitious you ask? Well throw the word "quiet" around in a vet clinic and you'll quickly find out we certainly are!

๐Ÿคซย ย What ensues after someone mutters that cursed word "quiet" is pure and utter ER chaos!

๐Ÿšจ Within minutes phone lines will flash, walk-ins will appear and the phrase "there's a bloat coming down " will be spoken. So we grab our stethoscopes, line our pockets with pens, paper and other random items before jumping straight in ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโš•๏ธ

๐Ÿ™Š Now remember, everyone makes mistakes! Dr. Mon uttered this word when finishing up one afternoon at EVA. Realising the error of her ways swiftly exited the building as the phone lines started to ring. Coincidence? I think not!

๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธLucky for her, her incredible team handled the night like superheros, literally saving lives and helping many more unwell fur babies along the way!

๐Ÿฉ The unspoken veterinary rule: you bring the chaos, you buy the doughnuts ๐Ÿฉ
