Exciting things are happening at Morphettville Equine Clinic! 🏗️

We are thrilled to share that our Morphettville car park has had a well deserved upgrade! With a whole new surface including fresh line markings, improved drainage and a reduced slip surface, the new car park provides a safer and more comfortable environment for our clients, patients and staff.

We are always looking for ways to improve the experience of visiting our clinic - because we know that bringing your horse to the vet can sometimes be stressful enough without having to navigate a less than ideal car park! This upgrade is part of our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible facilities for everyone who uses our clinic.

And yes - we can confirm that Dr Booth was very much hands on with the project. 😄 We will leave you to draw your own conclusions about whether equine surgery or heavy machinery is his true calling!

We look forward to welcoming you to our freshly upgraded Morphettville clinic soon.

With all this rain the autumn grass is coming through, and now is the time to be thinking about laminitis risk in your horses and ponies. 🍂

Laminitis is one of the most painful and debilitating conditions a horse can suffer — and while many people associate it with overweight ponies on lush pasture, the reality is that the majority of laminitis cases have an underlying hormonal component. Conditions such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin Dysregulation (EMS/ID) and Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID, also known as Cushing’s disease) affect the way horses and ponies respond to sugar in their feed and pasture — making them far more vulnerable to laminitis than other horses.

The good news is that with the right management and veterinary support, many of these horses can live happy and comfortable lives.

Knowing the early signs of laminitis means you can act quickly and give your horse the best chance of recovery. Early signs to watch for include:

👀 A pottery or shortened stride, particularly on hard ground
⚖️ Shifting weight between feet or being reluctant to move
🦶 Standing with front feet stretched out in front (the classic “laminitic stance”)
🌡️ Increased heat in the hooves
💓 A strong or bounding digital pulse
😬 Reluctance to pick up feet or turn in tight circles

❗If you notice any of these signs, call your vet promptly — early treatment makes a significant difference to outcomes and can help prevent permanent damage to the hoof structure.

If you have a horse or pony with a history of laminitis, or one that you suspect may have an underlying hormonal condition, our vets can help with testing, management advice and treatment. Call us on 08 8294 8900 to make an appointment with one of our experienced equine vets.

Did you know that sand accumulation in your horse’s intestines is one of the leading causes of colic — and that it can be detected before it becomes a serious problem? 🤔

Horses that graze on sandy soils or are fed on the ground can gradually accumulate sand in their large intestine over time. In many cases there are no obvious signs until a significant amount has built up and your horse is already unwell.

At Morphettville Equine Clinic, our vets are able to take abdominal radiographs (x-rays) to assess the amount of sand present in your horse’s intestines. This is a simple and effective way to identify a problem before it develops into a life-threatening sand colic.

If sand is detected, treatment can be started promptly — giving your horse the best possible chance of a full recovery and helping you avoid the stress and cost of an emergency colic situation.

We recommend speaking to one of our vets if your horse:

🟢 Grazes on sandy soils or is fed on sandy ground
🟢 Has a history of colic
🟢 Lives in a dry, sandy environment

Don’t wait until your horse is showing signs of colic — early detection really can make all the difference. Call us on 08 8294 8900 to make an appointment with one of our experienced equine vets.

What a weekend at the Adelaide Equestrian Festival! 🐴

As the only 5* eventing competition in the Southern Hemisphere — and one of just seven in the world — the Adelaide Equestrian Festival is truly a world-class event, and we are so proud to be part of it.

As usual, our Horsemed Hills and Horsemed Morphettville vets joined forces to keep horses safe on course. Our team has been associated with this prestigious event for many years, and their experience and expertise in competition veterinary work is second to none. Dr Holly Lewis took on the role of Veterinary Services Manager for the event, while Dr Andrew, Dr Jacinta, Dr Jacqui and Dr Ruth were out on the cross country as sector vets — ready to respond at a moment’s notice to keep our equine athletes safe.

We were also delighted to have some talented veterinary students join us across the weekend. Events like this are such a wonderful opportunity to give the next generation of equine vets a taste of what performance horse veterinary work looks like at the very highest level — and our team loved having them along!

We love being part of this incredible event and getting to support the horses and riders of our community at the highest level of the sport. A huge thank you to all the competitors, owners, organisers and our wonderful student volunteers for a fantastic weekend!

We all know there’s a lot of truth in the saying “no foot no horse”. The balance and shape of our horse’s hooves can not only predispose them to lameness but can also influence their movement and posture.

But once a lameness occurs it’s often too late to turn back the clock without expensive treatment or a long downtime. That’s why we recommend hoof balance radiographs on a regular basis for all performance horses or those with hoof issues.

Our vets can take these radiographs at the clinic or at your property. They take well balanced high quality digital images which can be shared with your hoof care professional. Being a farrier is a hard and highly skilled job, without having xray vision! We can even arrange our vets to chat to your farrier directly, or your farrier can come to the clinic and we can do radiographs during the trimming and shoeing process. This is especially useful in tricky cases where millimeters can make the difference.

Call us on 08 8294 8900 to make an appointment with one of our experienced equine vets.

A massive shout out to Morphettville Equine Clinic who saved our boys life on Sunday night.

Flame had life saving colic surgery thanks to Dr Todd Booth, accompanied by Holly Lewis and nurse Lauren. We are beyond thankful to still have him. The post op care has been amazing by Hol and all the nurses especially Bec.

Tracey McSporran’s experience and care meant we could get him there in time. We are indebted to you! It was a tough few hours for all.

He is picured below the day after surgery, he is much perkier now. Cant wait to get him home in a week. ❤️

🔍 Arthramid is one of our most commonly used products. But what is it and how is it used? 🔎

Arthramid is a 2.5% injectable Polyacrylamide acetate gel (iPAAG). However it is isn’t just an inert cushioning gel! It becomes integrated into the lining of the joint, helping with load transfer, reducing swelling of the joint and reducing stiffness.

It’s most common use is in cases of osteoarthritis, in both early and late stages, however it has a number of indications and is particularly useful in the early stages of poor performance or pre-emptive joint care.

However it’s not suitable for all causes of lameness, which is why it’s important to work with a vet experienced in iPAAG use. Did you know our vets were among the first adopters of this product and have treated 1000s of horses over the years?

Give us a call on 08 8294 8900 to discuss if Arthramid could be suitable for your horse.

Another heat wave and not much of a temperature reduction on the cards! 🫠 🥵

Did you know horses can suffer from heat stress too? And how good would you be at recognising the symptoms?

☀️ The most at risk horses are those at the age extremes (just like people!). Young foals are the biggest risk age group and they can overheat easily in an unshaded paddock - particularly if they’re following an agitated mare! Providing shade, keeping the mare calm (no fence walking!) and occasionally washing them down if possible can help

☀️ Profuse sweating can be a symptom of heat stress but keep an eye out for any horses with reduced sweating too! Whilst horses with anhydrosis (reduced sweating) are often comfortable in our climate, these heat waves can knock them around even if they are only mildly affected

☀️ An elevated breathing rate, heart rate and temperature are all signs of heat stress

💦 Rapid cooling is essential in hot horses - lots of cold water applied to the whole body is the best way to cool a horse down when necessary

Don’t forget to let us know if you’re concerned about your horse - heat stress can rapidly lead to colic and in some cases death if not treated promptly and correctly.
