Dr. Mitchell emphasizes several reasons why group walks backfire:
🧠 The Neurobiology of Stress & Over-Stimulation
• Cortisol Stacking: Group walks force multiple dogs into close proximity. If a dog is mildly anxious or over-excited, their cortisol (stress hormone) spikes. Because cortisol takes days to leave the system, repeated group walks trap dogs in a constant state of hyper-reactivity.
• Activating the "Avoidance" System: In his clinical work at Behavet, Dr. Mitchell explains that dogs process environments through either a "seeking" (curious/positive) or "avoidance" (fear/danger-scanning) brain pathway. The chaotic, unpredictable energy of a group walk frequently triggers the avoidance system, teaching the dog to view outside spaces as threatening.
📉 Behavioral Deterioration
• Frustration Intolerance: Dr. Mitchell highlights "tolerance of frustration" as the most critical life skill a dog can have. Being leashed near other dogs without being allowed to freely interact builds immense frustration, which directly manifests as lunging, barking, and lead pulling.
• Behavior Contagion: Dogs learn from each other rapidly. If one dog in a walking group barks, panics, or reacts aggressively to a trigger, the other dogs mirror that high-arousal behavior, creating or worsening leash reactivity.
• Undermining the Owner Bond: When dogs are routinely managed in a pack by a dog walker, they "tune out" from humans. They learn to focus exclusively on environmental triggers or the other dogs, making them heavily uncooperative or unresponsive when walking with their actual owners.

On lead containment for attention noise fail
for emergencies like for instance you have dropped medication on the floor or your adolescent has got into the medication cabinet or got into the rubbish!

Over 2 weeks these sessions can be super helpful:
Management: this must be always be supervised!

Start with a harness on and get your self a super cheap lead one that you don’t mind cutting..

Comdition picking up the lead = food,
high value! Repeat this over a few days when inside or on the garden.

Over the two weeks daily cut the lead shorter.

The aim is to turn withdrawals into investments.

Limiting rehearsal and being a positive caregiver protects the fragile relationship that can happen during Adolescence 🐾

6/ Impulse control systems lag behind motivation systems

Dogs raised with aversive methods will risk more so aversive methods will need to escalate…
No matter the cost there, there is no susceptibility due to risk taking at the neuro development stage.

Adolescence is a time to be an awesome caregiver teaching skills to navigate through what can be a behavioural challenging time.
