If our pets could tell us how they're feeling, I don't think they'd talk about tomorrow.
I think they'd tell us about today.
As an in-home end-of-life care provider, the question I hear most is, "How will I know it's time?" We look for one clear sign, one moment of certainty — but often the answer isn't a single moment. It's a pattern we've been watching all along, if we let ourselves see it.
Quality of life isn't about one more walk, one more meal, one more good day mixed in with hard ones. It's about whether there are more good days than hard ones at all. It's comfort. Dignity. The little things that made them them.
Choosing to let a beloved pet go is never giving up on them. It's one final act of love — choosing peace for them, even when it costs you everything.
If you're sitting with guilt over a decision you've made, or one you're facing now, I hope this offers a little comfort.
Your pet was never counting the days they had left.
They were simply living each one, with you.
And if they could leave you with one last thing to know, I believe it would be this:
"Thank you for loving me enough to let me rest."
