Grass Seed Season is Here!

As the weather warms up, grass seeds become a common hazard for our pets. These pointed seeds easily get caught in fur and migrate further into the skin, ears, eyes, and nose causing discomfort, inflammation and infection if left untreated.

After your pet spends time outside, take a few minutes to check your pet for grass seeds. Run your fingers through their fur, paying extra attention to between their toes, around their ears, eyes and nose.

As pictured, we recently removed this large grass seed from Moggs’ little nose! 🌾

Signs of grass seed irritation in your pet can include excessive licking, swelling, redness, limping, head shaking and sneezing.

We are very pleased to introduce the newest addition to our team, Dr Jessica Amos!

Dr Jess graduated from Charles Sturt University in 2017 and spent the first seven years of her veterinary career caring for small animals in Canberra before relocating to Adelaide three years ago. While getting her family settled in Adelaide, Dr Jess worked as a mobile vet and is thrilled to now be a part of the Newton Veterinary centre team.

Jess has a genuine passion for small animal medicine, with particular interests in behaviour concerns and palliative care. She especially enjoys building meaningful, long-term relationships with clients and their beloved pets, getting to know each individual pet and providing compassionate, personalised care throughout their lives.

Outside of work, Jess is kept busy with her two young boys and her two dogs, Narla, an Australian Shepherd, and Rupert, a dachshund. When she gets the chance, she enjoys getting outdoors with the kids or curling up with a good book and relaxing with a glass of w**e.

We are sad to share that after two wonderful years with our clinic, Dr Suzie will be moving on to an exciting new opportunity in her veterinary career.

Dr Suzie is now pursuing a residency in veterinary dentistry. While we will miss her greatly, we are incredibly proud and excited for this next step.

During her time with us, Dr Suzie has provided outstanding care to our patients and support to our clients and team. Her kindness, dedication, and professionalism have made a lasting impact and will be greatly missed.

Please join us in wishing Dr Suzie all the very best in her new role. We are so grateful for her contribution over the past two years and wish her every success for the future.

From gingivitis and calculus to pearly whites, swipe to see Lulu’s transformation! 🦷

Lulu is a 3 year old Samoyed who recently spent the day with us for a dental procedure including oral assessment, full mouth x-rays and a scale & polish (clean) of all teeth.

At just 3 years old, Lulu had gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and accumulated calculus build up on her teeth, requiring cleaning. This is very common and progresses differently for each individual animal depending on breed, diet, genetics and oral hygiene. Early dental intervention like Lulu’s case helps prevent progression of dental disease!

Retained deciduous teeth (also known as baby teeth) can cause a number of issues in cats and dogs. This occurs when deciduous teeth fail to fall out after permanent teeth emerge resulting in overcrowding, pain, malocclusion and periodontal disease.

These retained deciduous teeth require extraction under general anaesthesia, typically at time of desexing. However, all pets receive personalised advice from our experienced veterinarians.

Meet an adorable guest receptionist Ynez!

She is a tiny 9 week old puppy who is very curious about life, and regularly comes into clinic to become desensitised to the vet!

It is very important to desensitise dogs and kittens to all things such as people, objects, handling and different settings - especially vet clinics. The key window for this learning is during the ‘sensitive period’ which typically occurs while puppies are between 3-16 weeks old, and while kittens are between 2-10 weeks old. What they experience during this time has a lasting impact on their behaviour and wellbeing, with positive exposure helping to build trust and reduce stress later in life.

We love having little visitors like Ynez helping us make the clinic a friendly, safe space for all pets 🐾
