Very happy to welcome some more new additions to the collection—a trio of Western bluetongues!
Despite my many years working with reptiles, until recently I’d never had the opportunity to keep this species. It’s always exciting to work with something new, and I’m looking forward to getting to know these beautiful lizards.
Hopefully, once they’ve settled in, there will be some breeding activity this season. For me, one of the most rewarding parts of reptile keeping is that there is always something new to learn. Each species brings its own interests and challenges, and these bluetongues are a welcome addition.

This pair of Southern Pilbara rock monitors is looking fantastic heading into the breeding season. They’re such impressive little monitors, and it’s always a pleasure watching them go about their day.
There’s already been some activity between the pair, so I’m hopeful that a clutch of eggs might be on the way. It’s still early days, but the signs are encouraging. Fingers crossed for a successful season—I’ll be keeping a close eye on them and sharing any updates!

Gippsland water dragons! I’m so pleased to have these amazing lizards back in my collection, having previously kept and bred them while living in Victoria.
They’re in temporary housing while I begin work on a large outdoor enclosure for them and some of the other local species I keep.

These two photos highlight the importance of offering your Ctenophorus dragons a vegetable mix a few times a week. As omnivores, they need a balanced diet that includes both insects and plant material, rather than insects alone.

A couple of new additions to the collection! Two female Peninsula dragons (Ctenophorus fionni). After revisiting my old notes and photos from when I kept this species years ago, along with the recent research I’ve been doing while writing Australian Rock Dragons, the inspiration to keep them again was reignited.

Happy International Zookeeper Day!
I feel extremely privileged to have spent nearly four decades as a zookeeper. It never felt like just a job—it became a way of life.
The amazing species I have worked with and the conservation projects I have contributed to have taken me all over the world. Those experiences, along with the passionate, like-minded keepers I have met along the way, have given me friendships and memories I will always treasure.
From the daily care of animals to the unforgettable experience of releasing threatened species back into the wild, I have been fortunate to be part of something very special.
By a lovely coincidence, my first children’s book, “Byron Becomes a Zookeeper,” has just been published! It shares the adventures and discoveries of my early years as a keeper at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria. I hope it inspires young readers to be curious about wildlife and perhaps dream of becoming zookeepers themselves.
The book is available on Amazon.
To all my fellow keepers, past and present—Happy International Zookeeper Day!
