That rug is her own coat.

Varya is a Maltipoo. Under the curls, her coat had felted into one solid shell. You cannot brush that out. The clipper goes underneath, between the felt and the skin, slowly.

Shaving was not the failure. The months without a brush were.

She went home lighter, with a care plan. The coat will grow back.

Aslan is a Leonberger. His coat has two layers: a dense, soft undercoat and a long outer coat that protects him from rain, sun and cold.

A coat like this is never shaved. The undercoat is brushed out, loosened and blown out by hand until the coat lies clean again. What remains is exactly what the dog needs.
