A CASE OF COLIC TREATED WITH HOMEOPATHY
It's been about some years, a colleague asked me if I could treat a patient of him with homeopathy, and I did. This vet was treating a horse that had colic constantly and it got worse as time went on. Each time it got worse, taking more time for the horse to recover.
The first consultation I asked my colleague how was the colic? what kind?, how were the pains?, and everything else he could give me. His answers as follows:
- "Colic at first is unexpected, and then it transforms to a different strength level.
(of pain)
The symptoms are as follows:
- At the beginning the colic were spasmodic and developed in impaction.
- In the first colic the horse would feel discomfort and excitement.
- In the last colic the horse developed a stiffness condition before the colic and this condition was more manifested in the forelimbs.
Each time, they would treat her with medication but each occurrence making it more difficult to cure, as "the colic would last longer and the horse would take more time to recover"
By this time the horse's owner and vet decided to experiment with other kind of therapy.
When I went to check on this horse, I found myself with a loving horse that was in serious pain, her body was in great tension, thin, decayed, in very bad condition. She had strong temper. They said: "when she is loose, run and run, and they thought it was because she was too much excited to be out; and, when she rode her, would grit her teeth and when they tried to stand her up, she would get upset.
Why do I take the signs of her behavior?
Because the horse's actions and reactions, help to determine the best homeopathic remedy. These actions and reactions are different in each patient. For example, those who own dogs and cats, lots of times we've seen that they get scared with sounds of thunder and lightning and others it doesn't bother. That's why we should picture what the animal is suffering. Those actions from are very important to write down to determine a remedy to fit the animal. Each remedy has different symptoms that can benefit one organism but not the other.
In the examination I found the following:
- Great tension in the articulation of the temporo-mandibular (based on the horse's tension)
- The horse's vitals were very diminished.
Either way the horse was very aware and cooperates throughout the examination. So, I made osteopathy, acupressure and reiki with two things in mind:
- To create a bond with her
- Recognize the horse's body to see where the horse is more sensitive.
The fact of being a vet brings me closer to the animals and their problems. I think that the healing process is not only by medication but also having plenty of contact with the animal, in other words, COMMUNICATION. It is said that in every living creature, there is a natural healing force and my objective is to stimulate it.
Horses are not machinery that breaks down where you can buy a part to fix it. On the contrary, they are very sensitive animals that at times suffer due to situations that are hard for some people to identify. If we accomplish this contact, real and sincere, we will discover information that we can use to treat the them.
F***y, the female horse, received Nux Vomica. She was suffering from an intestinal problem due to not being able to adapt to a working environment, which was hard for her. As the matter of fact, this is a remedy that is used on kids when they have temper tantrums when they do not get soothing their way, or when they feel contradicted; and in the physical there is great muscle tension with nervousness.
Along with this treatment, we added a diet; frequent walks, manual therapy and wash with warm water on the abdominal area.
This consultation was the 17th of August and when we spoke on the 24th the owner stated that the horse was doing better and has not suffered colic since the treatment started. She went to the show the following month and did it well.
