Kinda chic, dog nutrition edition. 🥘🐾

Being a more informed pet parent isn’t about following every new feeding trend or having the perfect bowl.

It’s about knowing what you’re feeding and how it’s processed, looking beyond the marketing, and making choices based on your dog’s individual needs.

Healthy feeding starts with asking better questions.

What’s one thing about your dog’s food you wish you understood better?

The modern dog is exposed to far more environmental chemicals than most pet parents realize.

Unlike an occasional exposure, many of these compounds can become part of your dog’s everyday environment:

🐾 Pesticides and herbicides on lawns, parks, and outdoor areas.
🐾 Thermal fogging and other pest-control treatments in residential communities.
🐾 Household cleaning products, air fresheners and synthetic fragrances.
🐾 Chemical grooming products applied to your dog’s skin and coat.
🐾 Medications and parasite preventatives that the body has to process.
🐾 Contaminants in food and water, depending on their source and quality.

You don’t need to eliminate every possible exposure to make a difference. There are simple ways to reduce the unnecessary chemical load your dog encounters every day:

✔️ Avoid recently treated lawns and outdoor areas where possible, particularly during pesticide spraying and thermal fogging.

✔️ Rinse your dog’s paws every day after outdoor walks and wipe down their coat with a damp towel or wet wipe. This is especially important during periods of thermal fogging.

✔️ Choose non-toxic household cleaning products where possible and minimize synthetic fragrances, air fresheners and heavily fragranced products.

✔️ Choose natural, gentle grooming products without unnecessary fragrances or harsh detergents.

✔️ Use filtered drinking water.

✔️ Choose minimally processed food and pay attention to ingredient quality and sourcing.

✔️ Avoid unnecessary use of medications and chemical parasite preventatives. Use them only when required, based on your dog’s individual needs and veterinary guidance.

You cannot eliminate every environmental exposure your dog encounters, but you can reduce many of the unnecessary ones.

The less chemical exposure your dog has to deal with daily, the less their body has to process and eliminate over time.

📌 Save this as a simple checklist for reducing your dog’s everyday chemical exposure, and share it with another pet parent.

When most pet parents think about supporting their dog’s ability to deal with the urban chemical load, they think about finding the right “detox supplement”.

But detox isn’t just about what you add.

Your dog’s body already has an incredibly sophisticated system for processing and eliminating waste and environmental chemicals. The question isn’t whether your dog can detox. The question is whether those systems have everything they need to do their jobs properly.

Processing toxins is only half the job. Your dog also has to be able to eliminate them efficiently.

If your dog’s natural detoxification pathways aren’t well supported, they may not be eliminated as efficiently as they should be.

⛔️ That’s why I never recommend copying detox protocols from the internet or jumping straight into intensive detox programmes. ⛔️

The first questions I’d be asking are:

❓Is the liver receiving the nutrients it needs to do its job?

❓Is the gut healthy enough to eliminate waste efficiently?

❓Is your dog passing regular, well-formed stools?

❓Are the kidneys well supported through good hydration?

❓Is your dog getting enough daily movement to support healthy circulation and lymphatic flow?

These systems work together. Supporting one while ignoring the others doesn’t make much sense.

➡️ Safe and effective detox support is much bigger than one supplement or a one-size-fits-all protocol.

It’s about creating the right conditions for your dog’s natural detoxification systems to do their job.

Think about what the average Dubai pet dog is exposed to over the course of a year:

‼️ Monthly flea and tick preventatives – many are systemic medications that circulate throughout their bloodstream.

‼️ Pesticides, lawn chemicals, and herbicides - absorbed through paws and skin on every walk. Dubai parks and green communities are regularly treated.

‼️ Indoor exposure - cleaning products, synthetic fragrances, air fresheners, furniture treatments. Dogs spend most of their time on the floor, breathing and absorbing what settles there.

‼️ Ultra-processed foods - many contain preservatives, synthetic additives, and pesticide residues from ingredients that are consumed day after day.

‼️ Repeated medications - every course of antibiotics, steroids, and NSAIDs adds to your dog’s cumulative chemical exposure.

Most of these exposures are not an acute problem on their own. The concern is the cumulative effect of living in this environment every single day, for years.

Many of these compounds have been linked to oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, endocrine disruption, or direct toxic effects. Some pesticides and herbicides have also been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly with long-term exposure.

And chronic inflammation doesn’t just affect the skin. It plays a role in the development and progression of many long-term diseases, including osteoarthritis and immune-mediated disorders.

➡️ This is why I see proactive liver and detox support as foundational wellness, not something you think about only when there’s a problem. It’s one of the simplest ways to invest in your dog’s long-term health.

Not every itchy dog is truly allergic.

I work with a lot of dogs in Dubai with chronic itching, paw licking, and recurring skin flare-ups who are still itchy on allergy protocols.

One layer that often gets missed is liver workload.

In a city with daily exposure to lawn chemicals, fertilizers, cleaning chemicals, construction dust, plus routine use of antibiotics/NSAIDs/flea preventatives - our dogs’ livers are processing a lot.

‼️ When that load is high, skin inflammation can look exactly like an allergy.

This doesn’t mean it’s never just allergies. It means the skin is sometimes just the messenger, and we need to look at the whole picture.

5 things I always review with pet parents and encourage them to discuss with their holistic vet:
1️⃣ Medication history (antibiotics, steroids, NSAIDs)
2️⃣ Flea/tick prevention type and frequency
3️⃣ Home environment (cleaners, fragrances, lawn treatments)
4️⃣ Outdoor exposure (fertilizers, pesticides, pollution, construction dust)
5️⃣ Diet (degree of processing, synthetic additives)

Holistic care = looking at the whole dog, not just the symptom.

📌 Save this list for your next vet visit.

The question I get asked almost every day is:

“What’s the best joint supplement for my dog?”

And the more dogs I work with, the more convinced I become that this is the wrong question.

The right question is:

“What’s the right joint support protocol for my dog?”

Because there isn’t one supplement that every dog should be taking.

🐾 An overweight Labrador has different priorities from a lean, athletic dog.

🐾 A senior dog with osteoarthritis needs a very different protocol from an eight-month-old puppy you’re trying to support proactively.

🐾 Even two dogs with the exact same diagnosis may not need the same supplement routine. A dog eating an ultra-processed kibble diet needs much greater anti-inflammatory support than a dog on a well-formulated fresh food diet.

Yet social media often makes it seem as though every dog should be taking exactly the same supplements.

I see pet parents build kitchen sink supplement routines simply because each ingredient looks impressive on its own.

‼️ The problem is that supplements don’t work in isolation. They interact with the dog’s diet, their body condition, their activity level, their health history, their medications, their goals.

That’s why I almost never answer “What’s the best joint supplement?” with the name of a product.

I usually answer it with more questions.

❓ How old is your dog?

❓What’s their body condition score?

❓Are they already showing signs of stiffness?

❓What are they eating?

❓How active are they?

❓Do they have a diagnosed orthopedic disease?

Because those answers determine the protocol, not social media trends.

The best joint support isn’t about adding the most supplements.

It’s about building the right protocol for the dog in front of you.

📌 If you’re not sure where to start and need help putting together a joint support plan that’s tailored to your dog’s needs, send me a DM or WhatsApp.
