Who’s Actually Training Who? 😂
We spend a lot of time talking about training dogs.
But occasionally, it’s worth considering whether they’ve been training us instead.

You know the routine. They do the thing. You react. They take notes. The experiment is repeated tomorrow.
And before long, everyone in the house is beautifully trained.
Except possibly the dog.

This week’s blog takes a slightly cheeky look at life at the other end of the lead, because after 40+ years working with dogs, we’ve learned that sometimes the four-legged member of the family isn’t the one who needs the lesson.

🐾 Joey Says: Don’t Ignore the Growl!
A growl isn't your dog being “naughty” it's communication.
It may be their way of saying “I'm uncomfortable,” “I need some space,” or “please stop.” And while a growl can sound pretty dramatic, it's actually useful information.
Punishing the growl may stop the warning, but it doesn't necessarily change how your dog feels. You could simply end up with a dog who learns not to warn you.
So next time you hear that rumble, don't just focus on stopping the noise. Look at what your dog is trying to tell you.

🐾 Why does my dog shake when they’re not wet?
You know the one… the full-body shake that looks like they’ve just climbed out of a swimming pool, except there’s not a drop of water in sight.

Dogs will often shake themselves off after excitement, tension or a slightly stressful interaction. It can be a way of releasing that built-up tension and resetting themselves, a little canine “Right… glad that’s over!” moment.

You might notice it after meeting another dog, being handled, an exciting greeting or anything they found a little overwhelming.
Learning to spot these small signals can tell you a surprising amount about how your dog is feeling. Behaviour is communication, we just need to learn how to read it.

A reminder that soon we will be offering our Beach trips as an add on to any boarding bookings. We are in a unique position to offer your dog a trip to the beach, first thing in the morning to our "secret beach" ha ha! A video will be made of your dog's experience, and photos uploaded to your account. We totally enjoy these trips. We often take along one of our rescues too to enjoy the experience, so you are also giving another dog a special day too :)

Meet Joey! 🐾

You’re going to be seeing quite a lot of this face over the rest of 2026!

Joey is our new animated Homely Petz character, inspired by one of Neil and Amanda's own Golden Retrievers, Joey. He’ll be popping up in our videos to help us explain some of the everyday behaviours we see in dogs, what they might be communicating, why they happen and, most importantly, how we can work through them.

And first up... barrier frustration.

We’ve all seen it, whether it’s your dog going crazy behind the garden fence, or you’re the one innocently walking past on the other side with your dog thinking, “please don’t let that gate open!” 😂

Barking is communication as far as your dog is concerned. But when there’s a fence, gate or lead preventing them from getting where they want to go, that frustration can quickly turn into barking, lunging and a pretty dramatic-looking display.
It can look like aggression, but that isn’t always what’s going on.
So how do we address it?

We use our Dogzbody Methodology, our fear and anxiety free marker-training system that helps owners work with their dogs through clear communication and understanding. It’s simple, practical and a system we’ve been using successfully for over 20 years.

Over the coming months, Joey is going to help us tackle lots more of those “Why on earth does my dog do THAT?” moments. 😄
