Looking back today on COSMO CHARLIE, who was a front-running warrior for the yard. By G1 Travers champ Stay Thirsty out of G2 4th Lake Como (Salt Lake), Cosmo Charlie had one way to go—to the front and give him some rein.
Cosmo Charlie often proved too tough to pin back when doing so, including a debut victory for longtime client Kildare Stud (Frankie O’Connor) over subsequent G1 winner Capezzano in December of his 2yo year. Three starts later, he won the Listed Al Bastakiya, the 2nd leg of the UAE Triple Crown. He capped his 3yo season by beating G2 Godolphin Mile runner-up Faulkner, as well as G1 winners Wild Dude & Saltarin Dubai, in a salty Meydan mile conditions.
A six-time winner from 16 starts (from 7-10 furlongs), he also won the Jebel Ali Classic and Listed Entisar Stakes, as well as clashed with top-class runners Heavy Metal and North America when chasing them home in the G3 Firebreak (2nd) & G2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 (3rd), respectively. Pat Dobbs rode him in 5 of those wins, while Sam Hitchcott was aboard for the Jebel Ali Classic.
Part of one of the best classic generations in the UAE in recent memory—clashing with the likes of Thunder Snow, Bee Jersey, Best Solution, Thegreatcollection and the aforementioned Capezzano—Cosmo Charlie held his own and then some.
