Heard over lunch "Dog's collar and the leash subtly speaks about its owner!"
Well, thats on the lighter side but it somehow true for understanding the mindset of people using extensive electric /shock collars and prong collars on dogs. Sadly, choosing pain over proper command training.
Collars should be comfortable, neither too loose nor too tight. Should be used during walks and outdoor. It's not advisable to have collar embedded on dogs neck forever.
Use buckle collars made of leather, cloth, nylon or biothane. Avoid metal collars.
In city life especially, we feel the need of giving free access to dogs whenever possible and hence the discovery of the retractable. These needs constant attention to prevent dragging and tangling. One should completely avoid the thin rope like cord retractable leash as this can result in severe burns, deep cuts, entanglement and strangulation not only in dogs but humans too. They are not safe.
5-6 feet leashes are highly advisable. Keeps your dog from getting too close to others, prevents your pet from getting tangled, keeps your pet from wandering before he has been properly trained to heel, gives your pet a little room to explore without leaving too much slack.
