This hardy indigenous perennial flowers right through winter in Gauteng.
Crushing the leaves releases a garlic smell โ€” a natural snake and mole deterrent used in traditional gardens.

Message from the Managing Director

The past couple of weeks marked another significant milestone for DSMG as we attended the SAGIC - South African Green Industries Council Conference 2026 on the Vaal at Riverside Sun. It is with immense pride that I share that DSMG entered four projects for various categories into the awards programme and successfully secured an award for each entry. Our achievements included two Double Gold Awards (Environmental Management and Landscape and Turf Maintenance) , one Silver Award (Landscape Design and Construction), and one Bronze Award (Landscape and Turf Maintenance), a remarkable accomplishment that reflects the dedication, expertise, and passion of our teams across the business.

On behalf of DSMG, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to SAGIC and SALI - South African Landscapers Institute for hosting an exceptional conference. The event was professionally executed, insightful, and provided invaluable opportunities for learning, networking, and industry growth. It remains an absolute privilege to work alongside such dedicated professionals, and we thank you for the outstanding experience and knowledge shared throughout the event.

While our professional achievements have been noteworthy, the past two weeks have also provided us with many personal milestones worth celebrating. Our General Manager (Dana Swart) recently celebrated an incredible 47th wedding anniversary, while one of our Operational Managers (Okkert Oosthuizen), one of DSMGโ€™s most loyal and longstanding employees celebrated his 57th birthday, while another custodian, Team Leader of note (Justo) celebrated his 40th birthday as well. We were also proud to present our Green Thumb Award of May 2026 to Katleho Mosimane from Panorama Retirement Estates in recognition of his outstanding contribution and performance.

At DSMG, we are more than a businessโ€”we are a family. We believe that recognising and celebrating personal achievements is just as important as acknowledging professional success. These moments remind us of the strong relationships, commitment, and shared values that form the foundation of our company culture.

Overall, it has been an exceptionally busy and rewarding few weeks, and we have much to be thankful for. In addition to our recent achievements, we have successfully secured several new contracts and are excited to do what we do bestโ€”get our hands in the ground and create landscapes that make a lasting impact. There is a renewed energy and enthusiasm throughout the company, and it is inspiring to see the positive momentum building across all our teams.

To every DSMG employee, thank you for your loyalty, dedication, and continued hard work. Each of you plays a vital role in our success, and your contributions are valued and appreciated more than words can express.

From my side, as Managing Directorโ€”and as a family man myselfโ€”I feel recharged, motivated, and ready for the next term of 2026. As we move forward together, may we continue to ensure that the gardens we cultivate today become the seeds of tomorrow. May this principle guide not only the work we do, but also the lives we lead and the legacy we leave behind.

Thank you, and hereโ€™s to a successful and prosperous season ahead.

Stay warm,
Daneel Swart

Aloes are basically winter bird restaurants
Species like Aloe arborescens and Aloe ferox explode with fiery red/orange flowers in Juneโ€“July.
Their nectar is so rich that sunbirds gain up to 20% of their daily energy from aloe blooms.
Aloes time their flowering for winter specifically to attract hungry birds when other food is scarce.
