What a day at Africa Skills Week 2026 in Harare!

On Wednesday, 14 October, Yoma joined UNICEF, Generation Unlimited, the African Union Commission and partners for "Portable skills, Real livelihoods," a session focused on connecting young people's skills to meaningful opportunities across Africa.

The session brought together conversations on youth employment, green skills, verified credentials and the importance of building stronger connections between learning and livelihoods.

Participants also explored Yoma and YoID, seeing how young people can gain recognition for their skills and carry verified credentials as they pursue new opportunities.

A heartfelt thank you to our speakers, partners, organisers and everyone who contributed to the success of the session.

The conversations may have wrapped up, but the work of creating more pathways from skills to livelihoods continues.

🔹 Bharat Kundra — Skill Development & Youth Empowerment Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria / GenU 9JA.
How Nigeria passed one million young people on Yoma — and what didn’t work.
🔹 Masimba Nyamucheta — UNICEF Zimbabwe.
How climate mapping is becoming paid work for young Zimbabweans.
🔹 Ahmed Alaga — Group Head of Programs, Impact & Partnerships, Africa, The African Talent Company (Jobberman · BrighterMonday).

What changes when young people are not just included, but placed at the centre?

Johannes Wedenig, UNICEF Representative in South Africa, shares why youth development works better when young people are part of shaping it.

Yoma, co-created by RLabs, UNICEF, and Generation Unlimited, brings different partners together to support young people across learning, skills development, employment, and community safety.

_Johannes speaks about why no one organisation can do this work alone, and why young people need the right support around them as they lead their own journeys.
