"..Bivane Vallei was established as a continuation of this legacy, shaped by a new landscape but guided by the same principles. Our choice of the SA Boerperd was not incidental. It was the natural expression of a belief in a horse that belongs to this country that we love. Our aim has never been to reinvent the SA Boerperd, but to build carefully upon a foundation we trust..."

True to her nature, our Lang-Carel Geluk gifted us the most perfect filly on a quiet and misty morning, sired by Lang-Carel Jopie.

Welcome, little one, you already remind us of everything that we love about the Lang-Carel horses and we are honoured to watch you start your journey in the beautiful valley on Kwazulu-Natal.

We are thinking of using the name "Jasmyn" for her, but we are most open to any name suggestions beginning with the letter "J."

I stumbled upon these two old photos of Jopie, and they stirred up memories that inspired me to share this.

Here he is—Lang-Carel Jopie—first as a weanling, barely a year old, and then just eight months later, standing proudly beside his breeder, the legendary Jan van der Wath of Lang-Carel Stud.

But beyond Jopie’s remarkable transformation, what truly stands out in these images is Oom Jan himself. I can still picture him carefully selecting young horses from the veld, his keen eye spotting potential where others might overlook. His ability to recognize greatness before it fully emerged was nothing short of remarkable. And in Jopie, he was right—this stallion went on to claim two National in-hand championships as a junior and sire multiple title holders, remaining to this day one of our most treasured breeding assets.

This reminds me of another truth: the incredible potential for growth when a young horse is given the right management and care. Just months can make all the difference.

Since Oom Jan’s passing, we continue to miss his wisdom, his guidance, and his unwavering belief in raw potential. But as we eagerly await the arrival of four Jopie foals this summer, I can’t help but wonder—what legacy will they carry forward? Who among them will be the next Jopie?

Edit: Last added photo of Jopie as a 6 year old.

Nestled in the picturesque Paulpietersburg region of rural KwaZulu-Natal, Bivane Vallei SA Boerperd Stud offers a truly unique working holiday experience. Our farm, set in the breathtaking Bivane Valley—a blend of rugged mountain Highveld and lush lower valleys—immerses you in the heart of South Africa's natural beauty.

Join us on a real working South African farm, where our focus is on both cattle and kiwi production, integrated with the daily care and training of our beautiful South African Boerperd horses. As a participant, you’ll experience the robust yet rewarding lifestyle of farm life—early mornings, hands-on tasks, and the satisfaction of working closely with our animals.

Originating from South Africa, the SA Boerperd is known for its endurance, intelligence, and gentle nature—qualities that make them ideal for both working cattle and performing in the show ring. At Bivane Vallei, we are committed to preserving these traditional bloodlines while preparing our horses for diverse roles, from reliable farm helpers and excellent show partners.
Our horses grow up in a natural setting where mare herds roam free, and foals are mostly untouched until we bring them in for weaning. As a participant, you’ll gain firsthand insight into natural herd dynamics and horse psychology while working with these exceptional animals.

During your stay, you’ll become part of our team, working with the horses, tending to cattle, and learning about sustainable farming practices. You’ll also have the chance to experience the essence of South African rural life—its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and the strong connection between land and livestock.

The SA Boerperd's Intelligence:

Throughout my journey with horses, I have always been most captivated by the horse’s mind—how they think, learn, and perceive the world around them. Even as a child working with Oupa Jan's horses, I found myself endlessly fascinated by their behavior. Whether it was a curious foal standing by its dam’s side or a young horse I was trying to earn the trust of, I would spend hours observing their facial expressions and body language. That fascination never faded.

As I grew older, this curiosity led me beyond the familiar veld of home, taking me overseas to work alongside seasoned horsemen and renowned equine behaviorists with various breeds of horses - including the Mustang. Each experience enriched my understanding, but among them all, the South African Boerperd has continued to stand out to me. Widely recognized for its intelligence and natural affinity for human interaction, the Boerperd constantly surprises me. These horses are acutely aware of even the slightest of human movements, yet they seem to be able to process before reacting - which is a rare skill. Their problem-solving abilities are nothing short of remarkable.

But what is it that makes the Boerperd so perceptive? Is it their genetic heritage—a product of survival in the natural environment? Or is it the result of generations of careful selection and breeding? Perhaps it is a combination of both?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you encountered a Boerperd whose intelligence left you amazed? Do you have any stories that highlight their intelligence? Please share—I am always eager to learn more!
