Every day, our team responds to cruelty complaints, rescues injured and abandoned animals, investigates neglect, provides shelter, and fights for animals who have no voice.

But the reality is that this work can only continue with the support of our community.

Like many welfare organisations across South Africa, we are facing increasing financial pressure while the demand for our services continues to grow. From fuel for inspectorate calls, to medical treatment, food, shelter, and emergency rescues — the costs of animal welfare never stop.

We also understand that times are difficult, and that many organisations are appealing for help.

Today, we are appealing to the Midrand and Midstream community to stand with your SPCA and help us remain operational so that we can continue serving the animals who depend on us.

The Boerboel is a massive South African guard dog bred for strength, protection, and fearless defense against predators.

The Spotted Hyena is one of Africa’s toughest carnivores, famous for incredible endurance, intelligence, and one of the strongest bite forces in the animal kingdom.

While the Boerboel is heavier at around 80 kg, the Spotted Hyena has a far more powerful bite force estimated at over 1,100 PSI — strong enough to crush large bones with ease.

Boerboels rely on muscular power, courage, and defensive instincts, making them formidable working dogs with excellent guarding ability.

Spotted Hyenas are built for survival in the wild, combining stamina, coordinated pack tactics, sharp endurance, and bone-crushing jaws.

In a raw strength comparison, the hyena has the advantage in bite force and wild combat experience, while the Boerboel excels in controlled protection and physical bulk.

Both are incredibly tough animals, but they evolved for completely different purposes — one as a loyal guardian, the other as a dominant African predator and scavenger.

Dogo Argentino and the hyena are often compared due to their strength, bite power, and aggressive reputation, but in reality they evolved in completely different environments with different survival strategies. One is a domesticated guardian breed, while the other is a wild scavenger and predator shaped by African ecosystems.

The Dogo Argentino is a muscular working dog originally bred for big game hunting. It typically weighs around 45 kg and stands about 68 cm tall. Known for its athletic build and determination, it has a bite force of around 500 PSI, making it a strong and capable guardian breed when properly trained.

The hyena, particularly the spotted hyena, is a wild carnivore with a much heavier body, reaching around 80 kg and about 90 cm in height. It has one of the strongest bite forces among mammals at roughly 1100 PSI, adapted for crushing bones and accessing nutrient-rich marrow from carcasses.

Despite comparisons, these animals should not be seen as direct rivals in nature. Each is perfectly adapted to its own ecological role, one shaped by human breeding, the other by wild survival pressures.
