But not every animal has someone at home waiting with a treat.

A useful dog-training skill doesn't need to be complicated.

Try teaching a hand target.

Hold your open palm close to your dog's nose and wait.

When your dog investigates and touches your palm with their nose, mark the behaviour with “yes” and reward.

Repeat.

Once the behaviour is predictable, add the cue “touch.”

Over time, hand targeting can be useful for attention, guiding position and simply giving you another fun way to communicate with your dog.

Keep the first session short and easy.

Ten successful repetitions are far more useful than pushing until everyone is frustrated.

Case #001: “Cats aren't affectionate.”

The evidence suggests otherwise.

Cats can show social connection through behaviours such as head bunting, choosing physical proximity, relaxed slow blinking and greeting familiar people.

The problem isn't necessarily that cats aren't affectionate.

Sometimes we're simply looking for dog behaviour from a cat.

And the court finds that deeply unfair to the defendant. 😂🐱

Quite simply: we don't add sugar to our treats.

We believe pet parents should have clear information about the products they use regularly.

You don't necessarily need expensive enrichment toys to give your dog something interesting to do.

Try the muffin-tin game.

Place a few small rewards in a clean muffin tin and loosely cover some compartments with appropriately sized, dog-safe balls or toys.

Then let your dog investigate how to reach the rewards.

Keep the first attempt easy so they can succeed, and always supervise the activity — especially if your dog likes chewing or swallowing objects.

It's a simple way to turn an ordinary household item into a short problem-solving activity.

One useful lesson for adults and children alike:

Loving dogs doesn't mean we have to touch every dog we meet.

When meeting an unfamiliar dog, ask the owner first and pay attention to what the dog is communicating too.

A dog that turns away, moves away, becomes still or otherwise avoids interaction may be telling us they would rather have space.

And remember: a wagging tail alone isn't enough to tell us whether a dog is comfortable. Look at the entire body and the situation.

Respecting a dog's boundaries isn't rejection.

It's responsible interaction. 🐾

One minute your cat is enjoying affection.

Your hand has apparently violated the terms and conditions. 😅

Some cats can become overstimulated by prolonged petting, while others simply have very clear preferences about where and how long they want to be touched.

Watch for changes such as tail movement, skin twitching, ear position, body tension or your cat turning toward your hand.

Those signals can be their way of saying:

“That's enough now.”

Learning where your individual cat's limits are can make affection more enjoyable for both of you.

Understanding them is part of loving them. 🐱❤️

When you're training a dog, the goal isn't necessarily to give the biggest possible treat.

The reward is part of your communication.

A small, well-timed reward tells your dog:

“Yes. That's the behaviour I wanted.”

Using appropriately sized pieces can allow you to reinforce multiple successful repetitions throughout a training session.

And those repetitions add up.
