When your patient chooses the one spot on the reserve that even the game viewer can’t reach…

Sometimes wildlife veterinary work means the stretcher stays behind and the vet becomes the stretcher.

A little improvisation, a lot of teamwork, and one very special wild dog safely carried back to where the vehicle could reach us.

Because when conservation calls, you go where the animals are — even if that means carrying your patient out yourself.

Where we dehorn matters.

When dehorning a rhino, it isn’t simply a case of removing the horn. Every cut is carefully considered, particularly in young, growing rhinos.

The image shows the approximate position of the nasal growth plate — an important anatomical landmark we consider when determining how much horn can safely be removed.

The aim is to remove as much horn as necessary to reduce its value to poachers, while avoiding unnecessary damage to the underlying structures and allowing the young rhino to continue developing normally.

These decisions are made by using the rhino’s age, size, horn development and individual anatomy to guide the procedure.

Behind every dehorning is careful planning, anatomy, experience and one goal: protecting the rhino while doing as little harm as possible.

Having your best friend wait patiently while you work.

He doesn’t need to know what’s happening or understand the job — he’s just happy to be by my side, watching and waiting until it’s time to go home.

World Elephant Day

Every step matters.

An elephant’s feet carry an incredible amount of weight, across vast distances and challenging terrain. Healthy feet are essential to their ability to move, forage, socialise and simply live as elephants should.

This World Elephant Day, we celebrate these extraordinary giants and the people working behind the scenes to protect them.

Because protecting elephants starts with keeping them healthy, one step at a time.

There are moments in wildlife veterinary medicine that never need words.

After everything she’d been through—a broken leg, the stress of treatment, and the uncertainty of recovery—she sat quietly as gentle hands rubbed her face. A simple moment of trust, impossible to ask for and never taken for granted.

These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do. Behind every procedure is a life worth fighting for, and behind every scar is the hope of another chance in the wild.

Healing isn’t just about mending broken bones. Sometimes, it’s about restoring trust.
