🐾 Why Do Dogs Age Faster Than Humans?

Dogs have much shorter lifespans than humans because their bodies develop, mature and age at a much faster biological pace.

A puppy can go from being completely dependent on its mother to sexually mature and physically developed in just one to two years. Humans take well over a decade to reach a similar stage.

During those early years, a dog’s cells, organs, bones and immune system are developing incredibly quickly. This rapid growth means that dogs reach adulthood much sooner than we do.

But ageing isn't the same throughout a dog's life. The first year is especially fast. After reaching adulthood, the rate of ageing slows down. That's why the old idea that “1 dog year = 7 human years” isn't really accurate.

🐶 Breed and size matter too. Small dogs generally live longer and tend to age more slowly once they reach adulthood, while large and giant breeds often age faster and have shorter lifespans.

So when we look into those beautiful doggy eyes, remember:

❤️ Their lives may be shorter than ours, but every stage matters.
From the tiny puppy years to their golden years, they deserve love, good nutrition, veterinary care, exercise and plenty of time with their humans.

A dog's life may be short compared with ours — but to them, you are their whole world. 🐾❤️

🌿 Waar dit alles begin het… 🐾❤️

’n Klein stukkie Lumine-geskiedenis.

Lank, lank gelede… toe ons nog net 3 doggies gehad het — Hailey, Olof en ons geliefde rescue, Loki. 🐾🤍

Min het ons geweet hoe daardie klein begin sou groei tot die Lumine Kennels wat ons vandag ken. 🥹

Daar was nog nie hope hondjies, groot planne en al die besigheid rondom die kennel nie… net drie spesiale honde en ’n droom. ❤️

En kyk net hoe ver het ons gekom. 🐶✨

Hierdie ou video is vir my ekstra spesiaal, want Hailey was deel van daardie heel eerste hoofstuk van Lumine. 🤍🐾 Haar plekkie in ons storie sal altyd daar wees.

🤍🐾 Dachshund Colour Spotlight: Piebald – featuring Xena 🐾🤍

One of the most eye-catching Dachshund colours is definitely the piebald — and our girl Xena is a beautiful example of it 🤍

A piebald Dachshund has a mostly white coat with clear patches of colour, such as chocolate, black, cream or red. Many piebalds also have ticking, which looks like tiny freckles or little speckles scattered through the white areas of their coat. Some have just a few, while others have more noticeable ticking all over, making every piebald truly unique.

In Xena’s case, her piebald pattern is part of what makes her so special. It’s not “painted on” or mixed-breed colouring — piebald is a natural colour pattern found in purebred Dachshunds when the right genes come together.

What I love about piebalds is that no two are ever exactly the same. Each one has their own patch placement, markings, and little details, which makes every piebald baby one of a kind.

But as beautiful as colour is, it’s important to remember this:
colour does not make the dog — health, structure, temperament and responsible breeding do.

Piebald Dachshunds are still very much Dachshunds through and through:
🐾 loving
🐾 loyal
🐾 clever
🐾 stubborn in the cutest way
🐾 full of personality in a tiny body

With piebalds, just like with any Dachshund, proper care matters:
• keep them at a healthy weight to protect their backs
• avoid too much jumping on and off furniture
• use ramps where needed
• feed a balanced diet
• and always breed responsibly with health in mind first

Xena is not just beautiful because of her colour — she’s special because she’s Xena 🤍
Her piebald markings are only one part of her story, but they definitely make her stand out.

Die outjie soek na n liefdevolle huis 🩵✨️

🐾 **6-WEEK VET DAY!** 🐾

Today we went for our **6-week vet appointment** and the doctor is very happy with all of us! 🥰❤️

We got our **vaccinations and deworming** — and that deworming stuff was VERY yucky! 😂🤢 But we were all very brave little babies. 🐶💕

Mummy also got our **vet books**, with all our dates, vaccinations and important information safely recorded. 📖🐾

And then… **SHOPPING TIME!** 🛍️🎁
Mummy took us along to get everything ready for our special **puppy gift bags**! 🎀🐶

The funniest part? 😂 Because Mummy put us in our stroller, so many people thought we were **human babies!** 👶🏼🤣

We may be little puppies, but apparently we’re already causing quite a bit of attention wherever we go! 🥹🐾💕

**6 weeks old & already living our best little lives!** 🐶💙

🐾 Our household is officially running on fumes... 😅💤

The laundry is waiting.
The to-do list keeps growing.
The coffee isn't quite doing its job anymore...

But somehow, there's always time to find the comfiest spot for a nap. 💙🐶

While the humans are busy trying to keep everything together, someone has perfected the art of slowing down, getting cozy, and enjoying the little moments.

Maybe we should all take a lesson from our dogs. ❤️

🤍🐾 Dachshund Colour Spotlight: Cream Longhair – featuring Freya 🐾🤍

Our beautiful girl Freya is a lovely example of a cream longhaired Dachshund 🤍

Cream Dachshunds are known for their soft, elegant colouring, which can range from a pale creamy shade to a slightly warmer cream with deeper tones through the coat. In Freya’s case, her cream coat has a soft warm richness underneath, which gives her such a beautiful glow and makes her even more special.

But what makes Freya so lovely isn’t only her colour — it’s also the fact that she is a longhaired Dachshund.

Longhaired Dachshunds are believed to have developed from the original smooth-coated Dachshunds, with breeders introducing longer-coated dogs, most likely small spaniel-type dogs, to create the beautiful silky coat we know today. The result was still very much a Dachshund at heart — brave, clever and full of character — but with a softer, more elegant coat and often a slightly gentler expression.

Many people feel that longhaired Dachshunds have a slightly softer personality compared to smooths and wires. They are still playful, clever and wonderfully stubborn in true Dachshund fashion, but longhairs are often described as:
🐾 affectionate
🐾 gentle
🐾 loyal
🐾 sweet-natured
🐾 sensitive and deeply attached to their people

Of course, every Dachshund has their own personality, but longhairs often have such a calm, loving charm about them — and Freya definitely carries that beautifully 🤍

Just like every Dachshund, longhaireds still need the same important care:
• a healthy balanced diet
• good weight control to protect their backs
• regular brushing to keep the long coat clean and tangle-free
• safe exercise and less jumping off high furniture
• lots of love, care and responsible breeding behind them

Freya is more than just a pretty cream coat. She’s elegance, sweetness, personality and everything we love about the longhaired Dachshund wrapped into one little girl 🤍
