MYTH BUSTING MONDAY ❌🗑️

MYTH: Dog trainers have the best job in the world, so they don't need breaks.

BUSTED! 😂

Yes, we get to spend our days talking about dogs, thinking about dogs, training dogs and occasionally getting paid to tell people that their dog is, in fact, "not being spiteful".

It IS a pretty cool job. 🐶❤️

But we're still human... mostly. Hehe.

Even dog trainers need to put down the treat pouch, step away from the equipment and remember that there is a world outside of loose-leash walking and “leave it”.

So... we're taking a little breather!

There was no class this past Saturday and there won't be class on the next two Saturdays either, as Anita and Bianca are both away.

And for the next two weeks, our usual posting schedule will also be taking a little break of its own. 😎🌴

We'll be back soon with more training tips, doggy nonsense, myth-busting and all the other things you lovely lot have come to expect from us.

In the meantime, if you're spending some extra time with your dogs this week, enjoy it. ❤️ Give them a sniffy walk, play a game, practise something they already know - or, honestly, just have a bloody good cuddle.

Rest is productive too. 🐶💤

Training Term Tuesday 📋🐾

“It just happened out of nowhere!” 👀

Sometimes what looks like a sudden reaction has actually been building for a while - we just didn't recognise the earlier signs.

The Canine Ladder of Aggression is a useful reminder that our dogs often communicate long before they reach the point of saying “enough!”

They won't necessarily show every step, and every dog is different, but learning to spot those quieter signals can help us listen before they need to shout. 🐶💛

Recognizing the early signs—like turning their head, yawning, or walking away—can help keep everyone safe and stress-free!

This week at Lyttelton K9 Academy

Between our puppies having graduated🎓, the seasonal sniffles🤧, soft ball⚾️ and life in general, just one brave little soul made it to class this week.

Kudos to Stephanie Kachelhoffer and Miss Tibbie for being the overachievers they are. 😉🤭

They spent the session working on socialisation and body awareness...

Although, thanks to a certain autocorrect, body awesomeness might just be the better term from now on. 😂🐶

And honestly, after seeing these two in action, we're inclined to agree. 💜

First Aid Friday 🚑🐾

Not every little cut or scrape needs a trip to the vet — some minor wounds can be safely managed at home.

But knowing when a wound is more than "just a little scratch" is important. If it's deep, bleeding heavily, near the eyes or a joint, or isn't healing as expected, it's time to get your vet involved. ⚠️

💡 Handy tip: Take a quick photo each day so you can keep an eye on how the wound is progressing.

Today, we celebrate ALL dogs — every breed, every size, every personality and every story. 🐾❤️

The ones who make us laugh, the ones who keep us company, the ones who make our houses feel like home.

To the working and service dogs who give so much of themselves — thank you for your courage, your loyalty and the incredible jobs you do every single day. You may wear a harness, a uniform or a working vest, but behind it all, you’re still a dog who deserves to be loved, understood and cared for. 💙

And to the dogs still waiting in shelters and rescue centres, hoping that someone will choose them — please don’t let them be forgotten.

Because sometimes, the dog you weren’t looking for turns out to be the one you were waiting for all along. 🐶❤️

Wellness Wednesday 🐶🌿

“But they're still playing!”

That's not always proof that everything is okay. 🫤

Our dogs don't always make pain obvious and sometimes the little changes are the ones worth paying attention to.

This is a really worthwhile read from East Midlands Clinical Canine Massage & Rehab. 👇

⚡️DOGS IN PAIN STILL RUN, PLAY, AND KEEP GOING⚡️

Not a week goes by without a client saying:

“But my dog can’t be in pain—they still…”
• Play ball
• Go for walks
• Do agility
• Run and play with the grandchildren
• Compete in sports
• Jump on the sofa
• Chase squirrels
• Act ‘normally’

…and this is one of the biggest misconceptions we see in canine rehabilitation.

🐾 Dogs in chronic pain often continue to perform normal activities

Unlike humans, dogs are incredibly stoic. Pain behaviours are often subtle, gradual, and easily dismissed as “just getting older” or “slowing down.”

Many dogs with musculoskeletal pain, osteoarthritis, compensatory strain, or soft tissue dysfunction will still run, play, and remain active—because movement is instinctive, routine, and often driven by adrenaline, excitement, or habit.

They do not always cry, whimper, or limp.

In fact, by the time obvious lameness appears, pain may have been present for weeks, months, or even years.

🔬 Common subtle signs of pain include:
• Slower to rise after rest
• Reluctance to jump into the car
• Hesitation on stairs
• Reduced stamina on walks
• Behavioural changes or irritability
• Changes in posture or weight shifting
• Licking joints or limbs
• Difficulty settling comfortably
• Reduced performance in sport or exercise
• “Good days and bad days”

Pain is not always loud. Often, it is silent compensation.

Early recognition matters—because chronic pain changes movement patterns, increases compensatory strain, and can significantly affect long-term mobility and quality of life.

As therapists, our job is not just to treat pain—but to help owners recognise it.

Because “they’re still playing” does not always mean “they’re pain free.”

This week at Lyttelton K9 Academy

Our puppies were put through their paces by Principal Anita this week... and guess what?

THEY ALL GRADUATED! 🎓🐶

We are beyond proud of these precious puppers and their equally committed hoomans. Well done to everyone for the hard work, dedication and effort you've put in over the past few weeks. We can't wait to see where your training journeys take you next. 🥰

Meanwhile, our two newest Basic Obedience doggos had another outing with a visit to the park. They have both improved so much since their first session! It's always great to see hoomans putting in the effort between classes too — that's where most of the magic happens. 🌳🐶

Finally, half of the Intermediate crew may have bunked school this week 😅, but those who made it still enjoyed a proper pack walk, complete with plenty of climbing and clambering along the way. 🐾

Another week, another bunch of doggos and hoomans making us ridiculously proud. 💜
