β POND MYTH: If my fish are eating, they must be healthy.
A good appetite is certainly encouraging.
But it isn't a clean bill of health.
Fish can continue feeding while experiencing the early stages of water-quality problems, oxygen stress, irritation or disease.
That's why behaviour matters.
Watch for changes such as:
β’ Gasping or spending unusual amounts of time near the surface
β’ Gathering around waterfalls or aeration
β’ Flashing or rubbing against surfaces
β’ Clamped fins
β’ Isolation from the group
β’ Unusual swimming behaviour
The important word is change.
You know what normal behaviour looks like in your pond. When something suddenly changes, pay attention.
π Appetite tells you something. Behaviour tells you more.
