Spring is here, and while our gardens are bursting into bloom, they can also hide some unexpected dangers for our furry friends.

From toxic flowers and bulbs to fertilisers, compost, mushrooms, grass seeds and garden waste, curious dogs and cats can get themselves into trouble.

And don't forget about pesticides and other garden chemicals. Insecticides, herbicides, snail bait and pest-control products can be harmful — sometimes seriously so. Pets can be exposed by eating products, walking through treated areas, licking residues from their paws or fur, or drinking contaminated water.

If your pet eats an unknown plant, bulb, mushroom, pesticide or garden product, contact your veterinarian promptly. Don't wait for symptoms to appear.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Bailey’s dinner is LATE!

But while we’re laughing at her dinner-time tantrum, here’s an important reminder: never leave your dog unsupervised around food containers, bags or packaging. Curious dogs can chew through containers or swallow pieces of plastic, foil or other packaging, which can cause choking or serious intestinal blockages. Keep the food safely out of reach until it’s actually dinner time — even if your dog is convinced they are wasting away.

Happy Spring Day!

Spring brings warmer days, beautiful blooms and fresh green grass — but it also brings pollen, which can be a nuisance for some of our furry friends.

Dogs and cats with pollen sensitivities may develop itchy or irritated skin, excessive paw licking, ear irritation, watery eyes or sneezing.

Luckily, there are a few simple things we can do to help keep them comfortable:
• Wipe their paws after outdoor adventures to remove pollen.
• Regularly bathe them with a gentle, pet-safe shampoo to help remove allergens from their coat.
• Wash their bedding frequently to reduce pollen indoors.
• Try to limit prolonged time in long grass or areas with lots of flowering plants if your pet is particularly sensitive.
• Vacuum and clean regularly to remove pollen brought inside.

And remember, persistent itching, irritated ears or skin isn't always just pollen — fleas, infections and other allergies can cause similar symptoms. If your pet is struggling, it's always best to speak to your veterinarian.

Here's to a beautiful spring filled with sunshine, flowers and plenty of happy, healthy wagging tails!

Arbour Week is celebrated in South Africa from 1–7 September. It's a time to appreciate the incredible role trees play in our lives and our environment.

Trees provide oxygen, shade, food and shelter, help protect our soil and waterways, store carbon, and create habitats for countless birds, insects and animals.

This week, why not plant a tree or indigenous plant, grow something from seed, create a bird-friendly garden, or simply spend some time appreciating the trees around you?

Happy International Dog Day!

Dogs have a funny way of teaching us the most important lessons without saying a single word. Bailey has taught us that happiness can be found in the simplest things, that every day is better with a little fun, and that there is always room for more cuddles. And perhaps most importantly… life is better with a dog by your side!

So, remember to give your dog some extra treats, love and cuddles on this special day.

We can’t tell if Bailey loves or hates the toilet paper.
