YOUR HORSE KNOWS YOU ARE FRIGHTENED

Your horse knows you are frightened before you do.

When fear activates, your body launches a full threat response: your heart races, your breathing becomes rapid and shallow, every muscle tenses, your fine motor control disappears (if tested, you'd struggle to thread a stirrup leather or fasten a noseband) and your vision narrows to tunnel vision and fixes on the thing you are most afraid of.

Unfortunately, every single one of those responses makes you a worse rider. Tense muscles create a rigid, bouncing seat. Shallow breathing destroys your balance, and tunnel vision means you miss other important cues.

And horses, as prey animals, read your nervous system in real time. They have no idea WHY you are frightened; they just know that you are, and they interpret it as 'my rider knows something dangerous is happening.' Now there are two frightened mammals instead of one and the situation escalates.

This is not a character flaw on our part, but rather the natural function of human physiology. Understanding that this is your body’s normal response is the first step to working with it rather than against it.
