TAURINE: AN ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT FOR CATS
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that plays a critical role in feline health. Unlike many other mammals, cats have a very limited ability to synthesize taurine internally. As a result, it must be supplied consistently through the diet.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
Taurine is chemically known as 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid.
Chemical formula: C₂H₇NO₃S
Structural components include:
- An amino group (-NH₂)
- A sulfonic acid group (-SO₃H)
- A two-carbon backbone
Unlike most amino acids, taurine does not contain a carboxyl group and therefore is technically classified as a sulfonic acid rather than a true amino acid, although it functions similarly within biological systems.
Taurine is highly water-soluble and stable, which allows it to circulate efficiently in tissues and bodily fluids.
Importantly, the taurine molecule is identical across species. Taurine produced for human supplements, veterinary supplements, or laboratory use is chemically the same compound.
WHY CATS NEED TAURINE
Cats evolved as obligate carnivores and rely heavily on nutrients found naturally in animal tissues. Taurine is abundant in muscle meat, heart, and organs, which formed the foundation of the ancestral feline diet.
Cats lose taurine continuously through bile acid conjugation during digestion. Unlike many other species, cats conjugate bile acids almost exclusively with taurine rather than glycine, which increases their ongoing taurine loss through the digestive cycle. Because they cannot synthesize sufficient quantities to replace these losses, dietary intake is essential.

Cardiac Function: Taurine is required for proper heart muscle contraction and electrical stability. Deficiency may lead to heart disease.

Neurological and Immune Support: Taurine plays roles in neurotransmission, cellular protection, and modulation of inflammation.
Bile Acid Conjugation and Digestion: Cats use taurine to produce bile salts required for fat digestion and absorption.

Cooking, freezing, and grinding can reduce taurine availability, which is why commercial feline diets are supplemented to ensure adequate levels.
SUPPLEMENTATION
When supplementing taurine, 100 % pure taurine is non-negotiable. Products containing flavourings, sweeteners, or other additives should be avoided.
I personally use a taurine powder, with multivitamins.
Because pure taurine is essentially tasteless and odourless, it mixes easily into wet food and is rarely detected by cats.
A simple and practical method for dispensing taurine powder is to place it in a clean salt shaker with a tight screw-on lid and add a small shake to wet food at feeding time.
Taurine has a very wide safety margin. Excess amounts are generally excreted in urine because of its water solubility.
Taurine is one of the most critical nutrients in feline nutrition. Because cats cannot produce enough on their own, consistent dietary intake is essential for maintaining cardiac health, vision, reproduction, and normal development.
For cats, taurine is not optional. It is biologically required.
