I say this often, if you have horses you need to keep banamine on hand!

If I could only keep ONE drug in my barn… it would be Banamine.

After years of owning and managing horses, Banamine has saved me more times than I can count.

Not because it magically fixes everything, but because it can buy you time when a horse starts showing early signs of colic.

If you’ve owned horses long enough, you learn the little things that tell you something isn’t right:
• standing off by themselves
• pawing
• looking at their sides
• not finishing feed
• laying down more than usual

When I see those early warning signs, I act quickly.

My first steps are usually:
• Banamine
• Electrolytes
• A good probiotic
• Getting the horse up and walking

Catching things early can make a huge difference when it comes to gut health and preventing a mild issue from becoming a major one.

Important reminder though:
Banamine injectable should be given IV (intravenous) only.

Giving it in the muscle is a big no-no because it can cause serious clostridial infections in the muscle tissue that can become life-threatening very quickly.

If you’re not comfortable giving it IV, talk to your vet about keeping Banamine oral paste in your barn instead.

Also remember that more is not better.
Banamine can be extremely helpful, but overuse can cause problems like ulcers and kidney issues.

Make sure you:
• Understand the correct dose for your horse
• Know how often it can safely be given
• Keep good communication with your vet if you’re unsure

I’ve been fortunate over the years that by recognizing early signs and acting quickly, I’ve never had to call a vet out for a full colic treatment.

But if a horse isn’t improving or starts showing severe signs, a vet should absolutely be involved.

Because at the end of the day, horses are masters at hiding discomfort… and knowing your horse well enough to catch problems early is one of the best things you can do as an owner.

So now I’m curious…

I wanted to share a quick update for this summer at HT Horsemanship.

We will not be offering our traditional open summer camps this year. Instead, we will be hosting two small, invite-only camps.

Spots will be very limited, and invitations will be sent out directly.

We are so grateful for all the families who have been part of our camps over the years, it has been so special to watch so many riders grow. 🤍

Cooper has been working so hard and it shows! He’s now trotting independently and gaining so much confidence in the saddle. 💪🐴
Contessa is still his favorite… and we’re pretty sure he’s hers too. 🤍

This past Saturday we kicked off the first show of our season and I couldn’t be prouder of these girls! 🤍
For almost all of them, this was their very first show on a new horse. Everyone rode well, stayed confident, and their horses stepped up too.
It was such a blessed day!
