As these hatchlings are now a week old, they have moved from absorbent pads onto substrate - and judging by all the dust bathing and stretches, they are very happy about it too! 🐣💛 Sound ON for maximum benefits! 🔊

One of the ways we put in a little extra here at The Little Quail Co, is to spend time gently handling our chicks.

It gives them a chance to become familiar with human contact in a calm and positive way. Over time, our hands come to mean comfort, warmth (and food).

From an ethical and welfare perspective, this early trust-building is incredibly important. It helps reduce stress later on when routine handling is inevitably required, whether that's for identification, catching and moving birds, health checks and treatment, or general husbandry.

The goal is not to force interaction, but to raise confident, happy birds that feel safe. As a result, many of our birds will actively choose to approach and interact when we put our hands into their enclosure to feed, water or collect eggs and this is just one of the reasons they make such great pets.

I have also found them to be calmer when introducing new birds to existing pairs or groups and they don’t go off lay when we have to make any big changes.

As important as the welfare benefits are, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy these moments too. There is something incredibly special about earning the trust of such tiny creatures, and watching them choose to seek out your company 💛🐣

Pictured are some little ones who are nearly a week old (much of their handling is for short periods while their brooder is being cleaned out once to twice daily) and the hen some of this hatch are out of when she was six weeks old 🥰

Great post from !

My husband just walked into the kitchen, stopped dead in his tracks, and asked, “Why is there a quail on the counter with her head sticking out of an ice cream carton?” 🤣🐦🍦

Listen… sometimes farm life gets a little creative. 😂

Our little quail had a nasty case of bumblefoot, so we had to give her a mini spa treatment before fixing it up. We filled the bottom of a tiny ice cream carton with about an inch of warm water and Epsom salt to help soften her foot before treatment. Then we alternated with colloidal silver afterward to help her heal. 🩹✨

We cut just a little head-hole in the lid so she couldn’t escape during her “soak session,” and honestly… it worked PERFECTLY. 😂👌 The carton was exactly the right size, and she sat there looking like the tiniest, most confused patient ever. 🥹🐥

Farm animals keep us humble, entertained, and constantly explaining weird situations to unsuspecting spouses. 🤣❤️

Good morning world! 🐣

These little cheepers were early risers this morning 🐥

Chicks will be available for their new homes at 5 weeks when they are off heat and sexed. Our quail are notoriously friendly and make great pets!

As a responsible breeder, life long support is available should you ever need assistance or to return them to us at any time for any reason. Advice is available for first time owners and/or breeders and housing and supplies can be purchased separately.

If you already an experienced owner and rearer, chicks may be purchased from day old.

🐥 Chinese Quail have been raised for centuries as ornamental birds. They are among the smallest galliformis in the world and weigh just a few dozens of grams.

🌾 They are terrestrial birds: they love to rattle and forge little seeds and insects on the ground. Unlike chickens, they cannot perch on the branches.

🪴 The most suitable accommodation for them is a spacious aviary, developed mainly horizontal, with a natural background or shrubs, areas of sand or soil for dust baths, shelters and non-poisonous plants where they can feel safe.

💕 They are generally monogamous: they form very close couples and tend to choose a stable companion. For this reason it is advisable to dedicate an aviary to each couple, avoiding forced conventions that could cause stress or arguments.

📖 Even these tiny quails are recognized by the Italian Standard of Avian Breeds, in numerous spectacular colours.
