Rat girls/guys summer…

Rats are one of the most underrated pets in our opinion! They just need a little PR team .lyle.dvm

Harnesses >>> collars

We diagnose painful neck discs every week! One simple thing we commonly recommend: switch from neck pressure to a harness

IVDD prevention series video 3- ditch the collar for a harness šŸ¦®ā€¼ļø

Keeping your dog lean is one of the best things you can do for long-term spinal health

Extra weight = extra stress on the spine, especially in IVDD-prone breeds like Dachshunds and French Bulldogs

You should be able to easily feel the ribs and see a waist āš–ļø

Many owners are surprised…

That quick kick you see? It’s a reflex (patellar reflex) that most mammals have

Dogs, cats, humans- same spinal reflex, same nerve-to-spinal cord loop. A simple tap gives us real-time insight into neurologic function

Note 🐢: The sea turtle is being shown… reptiles don’t have a well-established or reliably tested patellar reflex

When your dog’s paw flips under like this, it’s not clumsiness- it’s a neurologic sign

Zoey is recovering from a ventral slot surgery, and that ā€œknucklingā€ you see in her front leg is called a proprioceptive deficit

Proprioception is the body’s ability to know where a limb is in space-when the spinal cord is compressed, that signal gets disrupted. The encouraging part: as the spinal cord heals, the proprioception improves!

Early surgery + controlled recovery can make a major difference in outcome 😁

The hand gestures can’t be stopped 😬

Anesthesia in dogs with seizures is often overestimated in risk

Dogs with idiopathic epilepsy are typically safe anesthesia candidates, especially if seizures are controlled and medications are continued. The diagnosis itself isn’t the main concern.

What matters more is stability and planning (blood pressure, oxygenation, meds).

We’re more cautious when there is concern for brain disease (e.g. tumors, strokes, meningitis), where anesthetic choice matters for brain health.

Bottom line: Epilepsy alone ≠ unsafe anesthesia.

šŸ¤“ FYI: Status epilepticus
A seizure lasting >5 minutes, or multiple seizures without full recovery. This is a true emergency and requires immediate care.

If your epileptic dog seems more anxious, clingy, or ā€œnot themselvesā€- you’re not imagining it

Epilepsy can change how the brain processes emotion and stress, not just trigger seizures

We call this interictal anxiety- and recognizing it is the first step to helping them feel like themselves again. Ask your vet about medications that can reduce their anxiety and improve their quality of life!
