I love animals very much, and I think they are more intelligent and emotional than we think. They can build strong bonds with humans and give unconditional love. That is why I think it's important to train our pets with respect and empathy. They are like children. They can experience trauma if they are abused.
I am so grateful there is research behind Positive Reinforcement training vs. Aversive Training methods that makes it very clear:
- They may not only be acutely stressful, painful, and frightening for the animals, but may also produce long-term adverse effects on behavioural and emotional responses.
- In addition, electronic stimulation regularly causes physiological pain and psychological stress, often exhibited by vocalization, urination, defecation, fleeing, or complete shut-down. In extreme cases, electronic stimulation devices have also been known to cause muscle contraction and respiratory and cardiac paralysis.
