The cruelty endured by our beloved Galgos and Podencos in Spain is almost too heartbreaking to comprehend. Behind those gentle eyes lies a past we may never fully know, marked by fear, neglect, and unimaginable suffering.
This Galgo was thrown 26 feet down into a well. Then, as if the fall itself weren’t cruel enough, the hunter covered the well, leaving him trapped in darkness, alone, terrified, and starving, left to die where no one might ever find him.
His story is horrifying, but sadly, this suffering inflicted by Galgueros (hunters) is not an isolated reality. And this is why love, patience, and understanding matter so profoundly.
If your Galgo trusts you, seeks comfort in your presence, looks to you for guidance, and has slowly learned that the world can be kind, please know what a precious gift that trust is. If your dog loves you without reservation, despite everything they may have endured, cherish that bond. You have been given the privilege of becoming their safe place.
If your Galgo is still afraid, still flinches, still struggles to trust, or needs more time to feel safe, please be patient, as their healing cannot be rushed. What we see as hesitation may be a lifetime of survival speaking. Meet them where they are. Celebrate the smallest victories. Let them learn, at their own pace, that no hand will hurt them and no one will abandon them again.
