Meet Lucius.
December 26th we got a call about a Malinois/GSD whose new parents werenāt up to the task of raising a land shark. He was returned to the breeder, whom we also got our Lola from. Louie is actually Lolaās brother from another litter.
We lost Lola last year in an unfortunate accident. And things havenāt been the same around here since. Lola was my workout buddy, my riding buddy, and just made herself one of the biggest parts of my life. She was just gone. And my family was devastated.
I am a monument maker, yet her project remains undoneā¦. I understand all about trying to pour from an empty cup. Iāll do it when Iām ready to sit with that sadness, as that is the very reason Paws exists.
Weāve been looking for a new pup, but just werenāt ready. Had a foster, Pig, for a little bit. And even had my Momās dog down here for an extended holiday.
The breeder called us, knowing we wanted a pup this next year, and knowing our story, she called us first. We went to meet him, and amidst the tears flowing, we decided to bring Lucius home.
Heās only five months old now, and weāve already had him nearly a month. Which means those people who purchased him didnāt even give him a chance. 3-3-3 with pupsā¦.. 3 days to decompress, three weeks to learn your routine, three months before they truly feel at home.
Belgian Malinois are the most surrendered breed of dog there is. People buy them as cute, adorable fuzzy little bears. But I donāt think anyone is fully prepared for the 3-36 months phase. If you arenāt willing to live your life for your dog, do not get a Mal. If youāre not willing to totally uproot your life and redesign it around your dog, please do not get a Mal. And even if you have one, and you think you can handle it, donāt breedā¦. alter. There are too many awesome Maligators sitting in shelters around the world because people simply do not know what theyāre getting into. I didnāt either, but my pets ARE family. And there is no quit anywhere in me when it comes to family.
Today is Louieās first day in the shop. Heās like a dump truck full of nitroglycerin driving through a mirror shop. But heās just a baby.
