Our basil is starting to show signs of cold damage so we are trimming it heavily today. Tomorrow’s Mother Road Farmer’s Market might be your last chance to get fresh basil so stop in and grab some!

Zuni Waffle Gardens Gave Every Plant Its Own Clay Walls

The A:shiwi, or Zuni, have grown food in waffle gardens. Each bed is a sunken square of clay soil, at least a foot on a side, ringed by raised mud walls about four to five inches high. The walls hold water around the plant and break the wind. New Mexico Magazine describes the clay walls absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, like a little adobe home for each plant.

Chile, onions, cilantro, and beans went into the beds. The work was done mostly by the women of each household, and in the past the water came from the Zuni River in earthen jars. After Black Rock Dam went in, in 1908, the river ran lower and the practice declined, though New Mexico Magazine reports it is being revived.

We will be bringing cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, eggplant, Daikon radish, basil, and Blue Hubbard squash to the Mother Road Farmer’s Market tomorrow.

The weather looks to be unpredictable so dress accordingly!

And if you’ve got FMNP coupons, don’t wait until the last minute to use them. We don’t know how much longer we can keep all these plants alive. 😆
