Meet Mike!🐾

We’re excited to introduce Mike, who brings five years of experience in the veterinary field along with his background as an Army technician. His experience spans both general practice and urgent care, giving him a well-rounded approach to patient care.

Mike is passionate about providing high-quality care for every patient and making sure each visit is a positive experience for both pets and their people. ❤️🐶🐱

When he’s not at work, you’ll find Mike hiking with his two dogs, Panini and Ursa, cooking, exploring new board games, watching horror movies, and discovering new music.

🐾 Emet’s Recovery Update! 🐾

Emet is a 2-year, 10-month-old cat who came to Spire with acute pain and lameness related to a slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) of the hip.

SCFE is a condition seen commonly in young male cats. The growth plate at the head of the femur can remain open until around 2.5–3 years of age, leaving it susceptible to fracture. In Emet’s case, it is likely that a partial slip occurred previously, followed by a more complete fracture that caused his recent onset of pain and lameness.

After discussing his treatment options, Dr. McAbee recommended a femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO) through a ventral surgical approach rather than attempting to repair the fracture with pins. Because the underlying bone of the femoral neck is unhealthy, pin repair carries a risk of failure. The ventral approach to the hip joint preserves the dorsal stabilizing muscles of the joint and allows for a faster recovery and earlier return to function.

During an FHO, the femoral head and neck are removed, allowing the body to develop a comfortable and functional “false joint” supported by the surrounding muscles.

✨ Now, Emet is about 4 weeks post-op and is walking without a limp at all! ✨

He is healing well and continuing to make progress toward getting back to his normal activities. Cats tend to be remarkably resilient, and we’re excited to watch Emet continue to regain strength and function as he progresses through recovery.

We’re so happy to see Emet on the road to feeling his best! 🐱💙

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Today is all about celebrating the dogs who make our lives better just by being in them. The couch cuddles, the muddy paws, the goofy zoomies, the endless games of fetch, and all those little moments that make them family. ❤️

At Spire Canine Orthopedics, we’re lucky enough to help dogs get back to doing the things they love most. Because every dog deserves the chance to run, play, explore, and live their very best life.

Meet Julia!

A Maine native (she’s a Red Sox and Patriots fan, but we love her anyway 😉), Julia has called Colorado home since 2014 and has built a career around caring for both people and pets.

Julia earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Mount Holyoke College in 2008, spent 16 years working as an EMT, became a credentialed veterinary technician in 2016, and joined the Spire team that same year.

Her love for veterinary medicine started at an early age, when she shadowed her local veterinarian and even watched surgeries performed on her own pets. Today, you’ll find Julia scrubbed in for orthopedic surgery, helping care for our patients and doing her best to make sure their people feel just as well cared for.

When she’s not at Spire, Julia is anything but sitting still! She teaches fire prevention at Mountain View Fire Rescue, cheers on her son at the hockey rink, and recently added youth soccer coach to her résumé. And because apparently that wasn’t enough, she’s also an ordained minister.

When she does find a little downtime, Julia enjoys spending it with friends, showing off her skeeball and curling skills, and expanding her whiskey palate.

We’re so lucky to have Julia as part of the Spire team! ❤️

Our lobby offers a calm, comfortable, and quiet environment where you can relax, catch up on work, or simply take a moment while your dog is in surgery or recovering with our team. For families traveling to Spire from outside the area, you’re welcome to stay in our lobby and work remotely rather than having to find somewhere else to wait.

We know traveling for your dog’s orthopedic care can add an extra layer of stress, so we wanted to create a space that makes the experience a little easier and more comfortable for everyone.

Meet Dr. McAbee 🐾

Meet the surgeon behind Spire Canine Orthopedics, Dr. Kevin McAbee, DVM, DACVS!

Originally from California, Dr. McAbee came to CSU for veterinary school after graduating from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He completed general and surgical internships in Los Angeles and Florida, followed by a three-year residency and then a fellowship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City before starting his career as a surgeon in Colorado. Aside from a short stint in Michigan, he has been a practicing surgeon along the Front Range since 2005, heading up busy specialty practices before primarily focusing on orthopedics. In 2015, he founded Spire Veterinary Surgery, and then Spire Canine Orthopedics in 2023.

Dr. McAbee is an expert in minimally invasive orthopedic surgery such as arthroscopy and regularly teaches courses on this topic. He has performed thousands of TPLOs during his career and looks forward to helping many more dogs through the surgery center. He has a deep commitment to giving back to his profession, teaching courses to surgeons and general practice veterinarians as an active consultant to Arthrex Vet Systems.

When he’s not busy being a surgeon, Dr. McAbee enjoys spending time with his family, having a meal with good friends, and watching any sport imaginable—from football to water polo to NASCAR. He is also an avid cyclist and spends many hours away from work on either the gravel or paved roads of Northern Colorado. He and his wife have three busy children who are growing up too fast, two doodles named Posey and Hugo, and an aloof kitty named Phoebe.

We’re lucky to have his experience, passion, and dedication at the heart of Spire Canine Orthopedics.

Meet Michelle, our Practice Manager! 🐾
Michelle brings more than seven years of experience in veterinary medicine and has done it all—from client service to inventory management and leadership. She recently made the move from Bend, Oregon, to Loveland, Colorado, with her husband after 19 years in the Pacific Northwest.
Her love for veterinary medicine started with her family's dogs and grew through her oldest daughter's passion for horses. At Spire Canine Orthopedics, she especially enjoys getting to know our clients and their pets throughout their surgical journey, helping make every visit a positive experience while ensuring they receive exceptional care.
When she's not at Spire, you'll likely find her hiking, reading , cheering on her favorite college football and basketball team the Michigan Wolverines, traveling to watch her favorite NFL team the Detroit Lions or spending time with her two daughters in the Denver area.

🔍 A Closer Look Inside the Joint

At Spire Canine Orthopedics, we utilize arthroscopy to diagnose and treat conditions affecting all joints. This minimally invasive procedure allows Dr. McAbee to examine the inside of a joint using a specialized camera, providing exceptional visualization while minimizing trauma to surrounding tissues.

🎥 In this video, you'll see Dr. McAbee arthroscopically removing an abnormal medial coronoid fragment, a common finding in dogs with elbow dysplasia. Removing the fragment and carefully evaluating the cartilage within the joint helps reduce pain, improve function, and support a more comfortable return to activity.

✨ Meet Our Team: Allison, Registered Veterinary Technician! 🐾

We're excited to introduce Allison, one of our incredible Registered Veterinary Technicians here at Spire Canine Orthopedics!

Allison has been caring for animals for over 12 years and is a graduate of Pima Medical Institute. She is passionate about guiding our patients through every step of their surgical journey and loves seeing them return to the activities they enjoy most.

Outside of the hospital, Allison enjoys exploring Colorado with her husband, Brady, and their two dogs, Lulu and Magnolia. Whether they're camping, paddleboarding, or taking their Jeep into the mountains, they love making the most of the outdoors. When she's not on an adventure, you can often find Allison at local craft shows, where she shares her creativity by selling her handmade creations.

We're so grateful to have Allison as part of the Spire family. Her compassion, dedication, and love for our patients make a difference every single day.💙🐶
