Happy Veterinary Technician Week! 🐾

We are so lucky to have such an incredible team of technicians here at Spire. The amount of hard work, knowledge, and care they bring to our patients every single day does not go unnoticed. From long days in surgery to the little things that help our patients feel safe and loved, our techs are such a big part of what makes our team special.

We truly couldn’t do what we do without them, and we are so thankful for everything they do for our patients, their families, and each other. Help us show our techs a little extra love this week! 💙🩺

Meet Ajax! 💙

After being hit by a car, Ajax needed a little extra help getting back on his feet. Thankfully, his only injury was a Monteggia fracture in his left front leg.

A Monteggia fracture is a more complex injury involving a break in the ulna (one of the two bones in the forearm) and a dislocation of the radial head at the elbow. Because this injury affects both the bone and the elbow joint, it requires specialized orthopedic surgery.

Once Ajax was stable and ready for surgery, he made his way to Spire, where our team was able to repair his fracture and get him started on the road to recovery. We're so glad we could be part of his care and help give him the chance to get back to doing what dogs do best!

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to for taking such good care of Ajax and trusting our team with his orthopedic surgery. We appreciate the collaboration and the opportunity to care for patients like him.

Here's to healing, happy days ahead, and many more adventures for Ajax! 🐾

We had such a fun day at this year’s Tour de Corgi in Fort Collins! 🐾❤️

There’s something pretty special about getting our Spire team out of the clinic, spending time together, and being part of an event that brings so many dog lovers together. And of course, being surrounded by hundreds of corgis makes it even better!

We’re proud to be part of such a wonderful dog-loving community here in Northern Colorado. A huge thank you to for putting together such a fun event and giving us another reason to celebrate our favorite four-legged friends.

We can’t wait for next year!

🐾 Meet Kiera, our Assistant Practice Manager! 🐾

Kiera has been part of the veterinary world for more than four years and has worn quite a few hats along the way! Her experience includes working as a Client Service Representative, Medical Scribe, and Veterinary Assistant, giving her a well-rounded perspective on the entire patient journey—from that very first phone call to seeing a family through their pet’s surgery and recovery.

One of Kiera’s favorite parts of her job is creating a positive experience for both pets and their people. She loves being part of a team that cares deeply about what they do and making sure every family who walks through Spire’s doors feels welcomed, supported, and cared for.

When she’s not at Spire, Kiera is usually making memories with her husband and their two boys. Their family loves to travel, and if there’s a cruise involved, even better! 🛳️ ( Kiera is usually behind the camera, so ignore the cut off photo of her husband that a fellow cruiser took) They also love spending time camping and enjoying the outdoors together.

When Kiera gets a little downtime to herself, you’ll most likely find her with a good book in hand. And once October rolls around, her free time takes a very specific turn… cheering on the Denver Nuggets! 🏀 From October through April-ish, you can pretty much count on Kiera being ready for game day.

We’re so happy to have Kiera as part of the Spire team!

Meet Erin 🐾

Erin is an Arizona native who relocated to beautiful Colorado last year. She found her passion for veterinary medicine in 2020, and got her start in a feline-only clinic, establishing her strong foundation in compassionate, low-stress handling and detail oriented medicine. Erin is a Certified Veterinary Assistant, and her primary role at Spire is as a dutiful patient care nurse, helping to recover your pets from anesthesia and keep them comfortable for the duration of their visit. 💜

Erin shares her home with her dog, Penny, and seven cats (Diana, Ciri, Sadie, Archer, Morty, Lemmy, and Beanie). 🐾

When she isn't vacuuming up cat hair, Erin enjoys exploring all of the beautiful sights Northern Colorado has to offer, indulging in creative hobbies like writing and drawing, as well as reading and playing video games. Meet Christina - our newest Spire addition! 🐾

A dedicated Veterinary Assistant, Christina prides herself on taking great care of all patients and their parents that come to Spire.

A lifelong animal lover, Christina started working with dogs when she was a teenager at a behavior center/boarding facility in Longmont, CO. Here Christina gained valuable knowledge on handling and socializing dogs of all temperaments, and a passion for catering care to meet each dog’s needs.

Prior to coming to Spire, Christina worked in human/veterinary research. Here she gained experience on the behind the scenes work that goes into taking care of our animals, such as nutritional and pharmaceutical research.

Spire is the best of both worlds for Christina! A mixture of caring and nurturing patients as well as participating in the cutting edge procedures that allow our pets to live the best lives possible.

When not at Spire, Christina is taking care of her own pup, a Chocolate Lab named Oliver! Together they enjoy hiking, camping and swimming. Christina is an avid reader, always trying to beat her ‘books read’ record from the previous year. Christina enjoys playing board games and cards with her friends, going to concerts and playing on her multiple slow pitch softball teams!

🐾 Emet’s Recovery Update! 🐾

Emet is a 2-year, 10-month-old cat who came to Spire with acute pain and lameness related to a slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) of the hip.

SCFE is a condition seen commonly in young male cats. The growth plate at the head of the femur can remain open until around 2.5–3 years of age, leaving it susceptible to fracture. In Emet’s case, it is likely that a partial slip occurred previously, followed by a more complete fracture that caused his recent onset of pain and lameness.

After discussing his treatment options, Dr. McAbee recommended a femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO) through a ventral surgical approach rather than attempting to repair the fracture with pins. Because the underlying bone of the femoral neck is unhealthy, pin repair carries a risk of failure. The ventral approach to the hip joint preserves the dorsal stabilizing muscles of the joint and allows for a faster recovery and earlier return to function.

During an FHO, the femoral head and neck are removed, allowing the body to develop a comfortable and functional “false joint” supported by the surrounding muscles.

✨ Now, Emet is about 4 weeks post-op and is walking without a limp at all! ✨

He is healing well and continuing to make progress toward getting back to his normal activities. Cats tend to be remarkably resilient, and we’re excited to watch Emet continue to regain strength and function as he progresses through recovery.

We’re so happy to see Emet on the road to feeling his best! 🐱💙
