This is Bjorn. He’s a 2 year old GSD, and when he came to us he was afraid of the whole world. The fear was intense and debilitating, and it followed him out of his crate, into the house and into every environment.
Today…he’s holding Place in a public area, relaxed and thinking. It took steady, patient work to get here.
Here’s what I want every new puppy owner to hear. Between roughly 8 and 16 weeks, a puppy’s brain is wide open to the world. What they meet, hear, smell, and walk on during that window gets filed as normal. What they miss can become scary later. Good socialization is calm, positive, well managed exposure to a big, ordinary world, with plenty of room for the puppy to observe and decide it’s safe.
Then come the fear periods. Puppies go through them at different points as they grow, and a dog who was bold last week can suddenly spook at a mailbox or a person in a hat. If you know it’s coming, you can slow down, keep experiences easy, and let your dog recover. Pushing a dog through it can set the tone for years.
Bjorn missed that foundation, so we’re building it now, one step at a time. Dogs like him can come a long way, though it’s far easier to prevent this than to repair it.
This is one reason we offer our Raise & Train program.
Bjorn is also available to join your home. You can submit an application through our website.
