A well fed dog is not an overweight canine.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗪𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆

This study followed 48 Labrador Retrievers throughout their lives, and its findings helped establish a lasting connection between nutritional management, healthy body weight, and longevity in dogs.

Here’s what the research found:

𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻: Dogs fed 25% less food than their pair-matched controls had a median lifespan of 13.0 years, compared with 11.2 years in control-fed dogs—a difference of 1.8 years.

𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: Food-restricted dogs developed age-related chronic diseases later in life, with osteoarthritis among the particularly notable conditions.

𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: The study linked greater fat mass and declining lean body mass with mortality, highlighting the importance of maintaining a healthy body composition.

𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: The dogs followed their respective feeding regimens from puppyhood, emphasizing the potential importance of nutritional management throughout life.

Although initially published in 2002, this is still as important today.

Because healthy weight management is more than an aesthetic goal. It is an important component of preventive veterinary care, with potential implications for both lifespan and healthy ageing.

For veterinary teams, this research reinforces the value of regularly assessing body condition, individualizing feeding recommendations, and discussing nutrition with pet owners before excess weight becomes a problem.

Safe spaces…..and no we don’t need to play with their food or bowl to show them we are the ‘Alfa’.

Can we please just let dogs eat?

We take the bowl away so they learn we won't take it away.
Huh?

We don't build trust by repeatedly interfering, all just to prove they'll tolerate us doing it.
Yet around a dog's food, that's exactly what we've been told to do.

Put your hand in the bowl.
Take the bowl away.
Give it back.
Touch the food.
Pat the dog.
Move things around.

All supposedly so they learn to trust us.

But what if they're learning the opposite?

What if they're learning that a person approaching their food means something is about to happen?

That a hand near the bowl matters?
That maybe they need to keep an eye on us while they're eating?

We wanted our presence around food to mean nothing.
Then we made sure it meant something.

And while we're at it.

Can we please not ask a dog to earn every single bite of food through training?
They deserve to have full meals too.

No strings attached.

Imagine having expectations attached to every morsel.

Do this.
Wait for that.
Look at me.
Work for the next bit too.

Not every mouthful needs to achieve something.

Sometimes we can just put the food down.

And leave them alone.
