🐾❄️ A Little Shelter Can Save a Life This Winter! ❤️
As temperatures begin to drop, let’s remember the community cats who have no warm homes to curl up in. For feral and stray cats, winter can be a dangerous time. But a few simple acts of kindness can make a lifesaving difference! 🐈
🏠 PROVIDE A SAFE, WARM SHELTER
You don’t need anything fancy! A sturdy plastic storage tote, properly insulated and protected from the elements, can provide much-needed refuge from freezing temperatures.
🌾 STRAW, NOT HAY!
This is SO important!
❌ HAY absorbs moisture, becomes damp, and can grow mold, leaving cats colder.
✅ STRAW repels moisture and helps trap warmth, giving outdoor cats a dry, cozy place to rest.
Remember: Hay is for horses. Straw is for strays! ❤️
🐾 GET THEIR SHELTER OFF THE GROUND!
Elevating a shelter several inches on a stable platform helps reduce heat loss to the frozen ground and protects against moisture. Insulating the walls, floor, and roof provides even more protection.
💙 A FEW MORE WAYS TO HELP:
🐱 Provide fresh food and water daily. Check often to make sure water hasn’t frozen.
🐱 Position shelters away from wind, rain, and snow.
🐱 Keep shelter entrances small to help retain warmth.
🐱 Never use blankets, towels, or other fabrics in unheated outdoor shelters. They absorb moisture and can freeze.
🐱 Whenever possible, help friendly stray cats find safe indoor homes.
❤️ COMPASSION DOESN’T STOP AT OUR FRONT DOOR.
These cats didn’t choose to live outdoors. Many are simply doing their best to survive. A little effort on our part can mean the difference between suffering and safety.
