Maine C**ns and their obsession with water! I'm not sure if she accidentally knocked the handle or if she's secretly a plumbing genius, but this could get interesting!

The Maine C**n breed is known for its incredible size, intelligence, and gentle personalities — but protecting the health of the breed must always come first. One of the most important health concerns in Maine C**ns is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a hereditary heart disease that can affect even seemingly healthy cats.

Responsible breeding means going beyond beauty and pedigree. Genetic testing for the known Maine C**n HCM mutation is an important tool to help breeders make informed decisions and reduce the risk of passing the disease to future generations. But DNA testing alone is not enough. Regular echocardiograms performed by a board-certified veterinary cardiologist are equally important, because not all forms of HCM are linked to currently identified genetic mutations.

At Tassel Tale Maine C**ns, we believe ongoing health monitoring is essential. That is why our breeding cats receive yearly echocardiograms to help monitor heart health over time and support responsible breeding decisions. We are proud to share that our cream silver boy Tyson and our high silver boy Viggo both recently cleared their year 2 echocardiograms, in addition to genetic screening for known HCM markers. 🩺🐾

Combining genetic screening, echocardiograms, careful pedigree research, and low COI breeding practices helps protect the future of this amazing breed. Healthy breeding programs are built on transparency, education, and a commitment to producing not only beautiful Maine C**ns — but healthy ones too. ❤️

The Maine C**n breed is loved for its size, personality, and beauty — but like many purebred animals, it has experienced a genetic bottleneck over time. Studies of pedigrees and breed history show that a large percentage of today’s Maine C**ns trace back to a relatively small number of foundation cats, reducing overall genetic diversity within the breed.

This is why responsible breeding practices matter so much. A low coefficient of inbreeding (COI) helps preserve genetic diversity and lowers the risk of “inbreeding depression,” which can contribute to weaker immune systems, reduced fertility, and increased expression of inherited health conditions. Genetic diversity is critical for the long-term health and sustainability of the breed.

Ethical breeders use pedigree analysis, PawPeds, and DNA diversity testing to make more informed breeding decisions and keep COI as low as possible. While no breeding program can eliminate every health risk, prioritizing diversity is one of the best ways to protect future generations of Maine C**ns.

At Tassel Tale Maine C**ns, we are proud to maintain a 0% COI through 7 generations and a 0.34 COI through 10 generations, because preserving health, diversity, and the future of the breed matters just as much as beauty. 🐾

Many people firmly believe that girls exhibit less affection compared to their male counterparts, but it's important to recognize the profound impact of socialization on their emotional expression. This is Irisha, a lovely high silver girl from a European breeder, and it's evident that she spent quality time nurturing her precious kittens. Irisha loves nothing more than to be held like a baby all day!
